TRS (Claiming GST) - Tax Invoice Has Been Damaged

So I have just bought a MacBook from JB hifi and the unfortunate thing happened, the receipt got ripped apart.

I walked back to JB and they happily to reprint the receipt but it will have the word "reprint copy" on the top. I have been told that i would have problem claiming the GST back with it. The next best thing they can do is writing up a manual receipt (with my name, address and phone number written on it) and they stapled it together with the original invoice (she taped it for me)

The problem is the manual invoice has no room for GST, so it only has the total amount

Anyone had experience claiming the GST back with damaged invoice?

  • Tape up the original it is still treated as original if it is still eligible..

    • Done this already

  • +1

TBH just photo edit the reprint to remove 'reprint copy', how would they know it's fake if the paper isn't printed on a water mark. If they investigated it the receipt number correlates to a real transaction so no problem.

    • It's printed on thermal paper.

      • Yes unfortunately

  • I'd be more worried about being over the $900 limit TBH

    • I'm out of loop, what limit is this other than GST from overseas?

      • If you claim GST back on an item > $900 you're meant to declare it on the way back in (and pay back the GST). They're becoming a bit stricter on this recently - a MacBook is much more than $900

        • I should be fine for this. It is for a gift for relative overseas (not really my sister paid most of them)

  • Take reprint copy and torn original, no problem

  • As others have said

    1) for items over $1000 you need the name and address of the traveller on the receipt.

    2) If you take the damaged original one and the reprint copy. You'll be fine.

I'll verify this when I'm home but I'm pretty sure my hand written receipt has a place for gst. I'm not sure what you mean by "no room". For a Australian tax invoice the receipt has to include the gst

  • I posted something similar (to a certain degree) here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/279971

Bought stuff from JB with no GST amount on it and got them to write a manual invoice, I stapled all I have and had no problem at all when claiming TRS. Good luck
