Chromecast Only Mirroring YouTube

Hi Guys,

I have a Chromecast 1 which my kids use to cast youtube from Chrome on my laptop to the TV.

Recently it's stopped casting and instead is mirroring the whole youtube site.

We can still watch videos but the quality doesn't seem to be as good.

Does anyone know how to stop this?

Thanks

  • Have you tried resetting your chromecast through the app? My chromecast 1 screws up every few months and that seems to solve it every time.

    • Laptop might need Rebooting as well

      • It's not a new problem so we have rebooted the laptop a number of times since this started happening.

    • I just tried that and it didn't seem to have any effect.

Are you using chrome to watch youtube? Do you cast with the button in the video screen or via the browser menu? It sounds like you are mirroring the screen instead of casting via youtube.

    • Yes, using chrome and we have always used the button in the top right corner of the browser and it's never caused any issues.

        Found this for you.

type chrome://restart (I guess into the browser)

        • That just restarted chrome. It didn't seem to do anything else.

          Oh. sorry to hear that.

Found another thread with another possible solution here. Hope this helps.

        • @Fiximol: Hmmm it looked promising but when I click the dropdown menu I don't have the option of casting to youtube, I only have the options of casting tab or desktop.

I am afraid I am not able to find much else. The only things I found were: return to classic youtube setting or make sure your chrome is up to date.

Perhaps try casting from another device (e.g. phone) to diagnose whether the problem is on the chromecast side or laptop side?

        • @Fiximol: Thanks for your help. It works fine from my samsung tab, so does that make it my laptops fault?

Actually I have another laptop that I'll try.

If it works fine from the tablet it definitely sounds like an issue from the laptop (or chrome) side. Good luck in fixing it!

        • @Fiximol:

Thanks, it works on my other laptop, but on my other laptop I can cast from the video itself, on this one I can only cast from the cast button in my browser. Not sure why that is or how to remove the cast button.

Maybe becuase I haven't used the other laptop in a while it hasn't updated chrome?

          @onetwothree:

I would check the chrome versions (the latest is Version 57.0.2987.133) to make sure they are up to date.

Now knowing the problem lies with chrome, I ran another google search and came across yet another possible solution - sign out of chrome and try again. The other option - to go to youtube setting and make sure it is set to "classic youtube" came up again also.

          Good luck!

  • I know mine doesn't give me the option to cast unless I'm logged into youtube for some strange reason

    • just tested mine and same here, chrome, which is signed in, will cast itself, so the tab, but youtube wont have the cast icon to cast just its player unless your signed in

  • Is chrome up to date?

either way the cast 'plugin' was recently integrated into chrome, you don't need to download it separate, im not sure what changes this means in total but you definitely need to use the cast icon in the youtube player and not in the top corner of chrome

    • Thanks, How can I uninstall the cast extension? I cannot find it in my list of extensions.

      • You shouldn't have too when you upgrade Chrome to a version with the integrated cast it does it for you, as far as I know

        • Hmmm maybe I should uninstall and reinstall chrome to see if that works.

  • Had the same issue. Updated chrome from settings and it's fixed.

  • Call support. Pretty helpful.
