Docking Options for Lenovo X260

Hey guys,

A friend of mine(not legolas) got a lenovo x260 recently (which I may have recommended to them lol). They were looking into buying the lenovo dock but it me it seems a bit pricy at $300 when the laptop cost $1200 or so. Because they still have to buy a monitor /keyboard which would be at least another $200. So that's an extra $500.

I always assumed you could just plug monitor into DVI port and keyboard to usb port and save yourself the cost of a dock. But am i missing something?

Cheers

You only really need the dock if you want/need all the ports and features that it provides:

    Features and Benefits:
    • 3 x USB 2.0, one supports always-on USB charging
    • 3 x USB 3.0
    • 10/1000 Gigabit Ethernet, supports enterprise manageability
    • 2 x DisplayPort 1.2*
    • 1 x DVI-D*
    • 1 x HDMI 1.4*
    • 1 x VGA*
    • 1 x Stereo/Mic Combo Audio Port
    • Driver-free, perfect video quality
    • Security Lock conveniently secures both your notebook and your dock to your desk with a single key
    • Physical rear alignment for a perfect dock every time
    • Smaller desktop footprint vs Series 3 docking stations
    • Charges your ThinkPad with an included ThinkPad 90W AC Adapter

If you don't need the extra ports and features and just want to work off a separate keyboard/mouse/monitor, then just get any monitor that is compatible (may need an adaptor for VGA monitors for example). I would also recommend using a bluetooth keyboard/mouse so you don't waste a USB port with receivers.

I personally use the Targus USB 3.0 Dock, available at Officeworks for $147. Does the job and it saves me plugging in ethernet and my monitor into my laptop every time I need to work at my desk for a while.

    • K. Thanks.
I think monitor can be connected via HDMI or DVI.
Probably won't benefit much from a dock. I guess I could always go back and get a dock.

  • Dock for convenience. When you are always usin- lap&op away from desk. Allows e&herne&
