Optusnet Email Hacked?

Does anyone know if Optusnet email security has been compromised recently?

In the last few months, all I receive on my optusnet.com.au email addresses (I have 2 optusnet email addresses) were phishing and fake emails telling me I have won something or thousands of dollars are waiting for me to collect. My mother-in-law also has an optusnet email address and she experienced the same thing.

I normally just delete them but it is getting annoying.

What can one do to stop receiving such emails legally?

Just poor spam filtering on the part of Optus.

BTW it's not a good idea to get tied to your ISP's mailbox; it makes it harder to change providers.

Perhaps you signed up for a competition or something and your details for releases to a third party ( or your email addresses was found on the web)..

Emails to your account doesn't mean it was hacked.
Best bet is to login to optusnet and add some manually filters to send the spam to your deleted folder (make sure the rules are pretty specific).

  • Your account doesn't need to be "hacked" to receive emails.

    • No it doesn't. But the scammers need to know my email address and I don't publish it so they must have to hack something/someone to get it

      • Exposure of email addresses happens all the time even if you do nothing. A common way is somebody who has your address in their book contracts a virus that steals their address book.
