Ubuntu Linux v16.04

Any users out there?

I made the swap on a laptop which Windows 10 was grinding to a halt. Works a treat now.

My father-in-law has been running a desktop with Vista (unsupported now) and it's rife with viruses and malware. Finally convinced him to try Ubuntu. Will be interesting to see how he copes.

Q. has anyone else had the Ubuntu Software Centre fail? Mine has and I have no idea how to repair it. I've installed a new installer as a work around but would like it back…..

Linux user here but not Ubuntu. So I can't answer that Ubuntu specific issue. I think you will get better answers on the Ubuntu help forums. I've found good answers there in the past showing up on web searches. You could also try searching on "Ubuntu software center fail" and hopefully one of the answers will hit the spot.

I've not had it fail but I also don't use it… as personally I prefer the old Software Center.. The new Ubuntu Software Center has bugger-all available.
    sudo apt-get install software-center

But if you like the new one, follow this.
    https://askubuntu.com/questions/865255/how-to-fix-ubuntu-sof…

    sudo apt purge gnome-software ubuntu-software
    sudo apt autoremove
    sudo apt install gnome-software ubuntu-software

    Essentially just removing and reinstalling.

    • Thanks

      • sudo apt-get moo

        :)

Forget the software centre / Synaptic.

I would've recommended Mint (fork of Ubuntu with something extra) .Google linoob

Cheers all. Gave the father-in-law his Ubuntu box and he can't believe how much faster it is and how easy to use.

Will try these software centre things tonight.

Linux adoption always makes me smile. Keep learning and please contribute back to the project in anyway you can.

  • Definitely look at trying Linux Mint, Ubuntu is nowhere near as popular as it once was for various reasons.

Mint is a good place to start for Linux noobs.

    • Mint is a bastardised Ubuntu which is Debian's retarded little cousin. All of these are just a collection of crap bundled on top of Linux and pushed to users with different needs/wants.

Let's not forget that more people know about Ubuntu than distrowatch … Your source may not be truly representative.
