Surely can't be that hard, find a model that ticks your boxes and keep an eye out for it used.

Late last year I bought a Used Toshiba Portege R830 for $200.
Came with 4Gb RAM, 240Gb SSD, sadly no backlit keyboard, 13.3" screen and DVD-RW.
Bought a $10 eBay HDD caddy to replace the DVD drive and installed a 320Gb HDD I already owned, added $15 Used 4Gb RAM stick to bring it up to 8Gb and one of these Flexible, Dimmable USB LED Lights to front light the keyboard…

The screen isn't amazing, and I'd have preferred a backlit keyboard, but for $230 total I have a sturdy yet lightweight machine with reasonable performance, 6 hours battery life and readily available replacement batteries.

MSY have a bunch of new laptops for under $400 (http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/notebook.pdf) but I'm not sure it will meet all your spec requirements.

    Thinkpad X230 or Thinkpad T430
    Dell Latitude E6440

All of which are under the $400 mark on ebay

specifications can differ on these laptops so you should short list and compare them. they can be FHD display, may have backlit KB and may have an SSD.

  • Good luck.

  • Expect crap, used or old stock for that money.
