The Good Guys Really Didn't Want to Sell Me a Fan

This is a bit more of sharing an experience than anything as it kind of just left me a little bewildered.

I walked into Good Guys Moorabbin and found one of those fancy copper pedestal fans (my wife loves anything copper). It was stored on an overhead shelf above some fridges (seems like it's been parked until summer as the cooling section had all been replaced with heaters).

I asked if they had any left or even any floor stock and the lady did the whole "oh we probably don't have any more because it's a seasonal item" (obviously couldn't be bothered checking). So I asked if they could sell me the one on the shelf, at which point she heaved a sigh and said she'd ask the manager. She came back and told me that they couldn't sell it to me because they "couldn't reach it". Yet right behind her was a person on a scissor lift, and he'd been using it to reach other items on high shelves on the other side of the store the whole time she'd been giving me this excuse.

It's really not a big deal that I couldn't buy a fan off them, but it was just the completely unhelpful attitude that threw me. Maybe there are some work safety rules that prevent them from reaching for things high up (but how did they get it up there in the first place then?) or maybe they didn't want to deal with their system telling them the item couldn't be sold outside of the season. Either that or TGG are swimming in so much money that they really didn't want any of mine.

Either way, it's this kind of attitude that drives potential customers away from future visits. At least I wasn't tempted to spend any money that day.

So, you're no longer a fan of TGG?

Their attitude left me a little cold

Real pity they blew you off.

It certainly took the wind out of my sails

@nytrojen: I'd never put TGG's service on any sort of pedestal.

@MITM: You could have spun this thread in a different direction..

I for one would have told them to sit on my finger and rotate with that kind of service!

Sad you coppered such bad customer service…

@Kangal: usually buying a fan from TGG is a breeze

        • @altomic: The winds of change have left them all as real blowhards

        • @nytrojen: now you've cooled down, did you get what you were looking for?

        • @rompastompa: They're still giving me the cold shoulder

And what was the response from the Manager when you had the unhelpful sales assistant call him/her?

Service in any store will never improve while we let them get away with such outrageous behaviour.

I know we need to pick our battles, but come on, he only wanted to buy a simple fan.

I hope you've let Richard Murray know about this. JB spent a fortune buying TGG, so he will want them to continue selling stuff to paying customers so he gets a return on his investment.

    • Well the sales assistant walked away to ask a manager. I didn't watch where she went or even check whether she actually asked anyone. After she gave me the manager's reply I just really could not be bothered hanging around anymore

Maybe the lady wanted it for herself and was shooing away others hmm

Happens all the time. You'd be suprised how lazy staff can be.

  • Worked at Woolies doing nightfill for a second job for a while and when you ask them to check if there's an item out the back it involves "No problem", then the guy heads out the back, has a chat to the dude working in the freezer for five minutes, then comes back and says "sorry, we're all out, it's been reordered and should be in on Thursday."

I personally used to have a look but he was a great guy to work for.

    • This is very true. The stock room (I am told) is huge and they can't be bothered searching for boxes.
They just wait a few minutes and come back and say "out of stock" lol

It's a pain in the arse alright, you work up a sweat and usually for nothing.

Sometimes you will be lucky to get the odd person who will go out of their way to help you.
Remembering the time I got all the half price disposable gloves lol
