I'm a Broke Ass Student Trying to Become an Entrepreneur

Hello,

I'm Chris and i am a 19 year old broke ass nursing student with a dream.

like many people i don't have a damn clue of what to do with my life but have always enjoyed buying and selling on eBay and gum tree or similar websites and really like the idea of owning my own business and becoming a entrepreneur plus the cash money is pretty sweet. anyways i'm looking into what i should sell and found that gaming mouse pads or play mats is something i can sell, i found suppliers and i am currently getting samples of the play mats and they look pretty mint.

I was wondering if the Oz bargain family would be interested in buying these mouse pads or is there any other products you guys could suggest for me to sell.

Cheers for reading.

for real though please help a brother out i told my mom i was gonna quit uni and she is hella mad so i need to make something out of this and make cash money.

Edit: look out for a deal post coming soon in the next couple weeks (start-mid May). I'm gonna go for it and would love your guy's support, will keep in mind money savvy buyers and take care of buyers. Peace

i don't have a damn clue of what to do with my life

I am 29 half-broke ass I still don't have a damn clue of what to do with my life don't stress too much. Finish uni and keep trying different things until you find what you like.

  • For everyone that are saying Don't Quit Uni, Uni isn't for everyone. Some people gain nothing from uni except a degree that they're not interested in & a huge HECS debt. However, OP's alternative plan does not sound good at all…

I will prob get downvoted for this but…

What is it with guys starting some small web based business (selling stuff on ebay/gumtree seems quite small), and then throwing around the term Entrepreneur to sound fancy.

I swear half the men who went on the Bachelorette last season were 'entrepreneurs', 'models' or 'instagram "model" who runs a personal training business (entrepreneur) via Instagram and goes on to Reality TV show to become famous'.

Lol sorry mini rant… might go eat something…

  • Like many of the comments here, DO NOT quit uni.

Quitting something because you're not sure what you want to do is illogical. You're just cutting down your options when you're not sure what the results should be.

Go to westpac for advice my financial advisor said that cars are a high yeild investment

  • No, I wouldn't buy mouse pads. Mouse pads will probably be obsolete within 10 years. Gamers already have brands that they like… It will be near impossible to crack that market and make a decent living off. If you must find an item to sell, I suggest finding items that cannot be found for $1 on evilbay.

Cash money is pretty sweet until you want to buy a house, get a credit card or anything else that requires proof of income.

i hear $80k bmws are a good investment and will help you get your foot in the door as an entrepreneur

  • That's how it starts. Everything successful starts from the pain. My brother was struggling and now he has its own restaurant. You just have to find your passion and make both ends meet.

Posting on forums for tips will only bring u down.. Not a great start I would say..

If you are talented in some things then make youtube videos or write a book which would give you passive income if it does well.. Try drop shipping buy from AE and sell it here on gumtree ebay at a profit.. If you do well build a e-commerce website.. Take care of your customers and they will open their pockets for you.. Dont be greedy give and receive. Take up some job to get finance sorted..

This is what you will learn from self help books like 4 hour work week.. Lots of great tips there.. But needs a lot of dedication and patience..

I'm too lazy and settled so I do a daily job.. And shop things I don't need when there are ozbargain deals.. I may buy your mouse pad but it won't help u much .. I hope you do well.. Cheers..

      Depends whats under the bonut.

  • Look at the most voted deals on this website and start from there. Tbh it is hard to make a living selling items unless you know a good supplier or can source some good cheap items from other sellers who want to offload their items.

You can sell a little bit and the work is tough. Check items you might be interested in and see if there competition.

From browsing Ozbargain electronics seem to do well. The best margins would be flagship phones and tv's basically anything that could get you a large $ figure for your time per item sold.

You could really if you wanted broden some items it is looked down upon here but in the world of business anything goes not every buyer is an Ozbargain for example there is a cheap deal on tv's going on now $599 55" jvc 4k tv. Buy 10 resell for close to double that's $6k side income stream rinse and repeat for other good valuables. If people find out here they will hate you for it and with good reasons as this is the opposite of a broden ozmarket but if you really want to make quick money and can lot in the time and effort this is how I would go about it especially for a 19 year old the sky is the limit just don't get carried away and remember to keep checking yourself that you are doing the right thing for yourself nobody else.

Edit: keep your eyes peeled for good bargains namely electronics or big ticket items I just saw some iPad mini 2s seeing for $150 and $600 4k jvc tvs as an example if you do your research I'm sure you can find some links and weaknesses and make a good killing if you put your mind into it.

Mouse pads are good and anything related to tech and gaming as there is a large community.. but imho prices are the most cut throat because of said large community

Run some trial tests see how you go.

      Pretty bad advice
Buy 10 JVC TVs and then try and sell them for double what you paid, seen how well that went for gumtree people lol, they are then left with 10 fairly low grade 4k TVs, sure you could maybe make 50-100 on each one but the time effort and tire kickers just ain't worth it these days

You'd be right in saying if he bought 10x nintendo mini SNES and sold them on eBay in an auction

People are savvy and know when they're being ripped off thanks to the internet, preying on short stock isn't going to win you any favours at the end of the day, unless you're offloading millions of dollars worth of stock good luck as someone's already doing it
      .

      • True I guess the gist of my long comment was find something valuable with low stock or unbelievable price then resell it. I mean the the tv thing is probably a bad one because people don't buy tv's that often but yeah something like the Nintendo mini snes was a good deal.

Warranty is also important. Unless you're offering the warranty yourself, you would want to get rid of those tvs/electronics asap. A low end second hand 2yo tv without warranty isn't in high demand nor is it valuable. If not played right, you could lose money.

Buying cheap stuff for really cheap and selling it for less cheap isn't exactly entrepreneurial these days. Stay in school buddy.

  • Now that torrents are blocked.. Its a good time to get into pirated DVD's.

At an average nurse wage of $60,000, you better be selling a lot of mouse pads!

Also, I've had the same mouse pad for 10 years…. so I would rather give you a dollar to stay in school :/

  • nurses have easy access to drugs —-> cash!

    Stay in school

  • Stay in nursing school and hook up with a rich doctor.

  • Contact NDIS and see how you can use a nursing degree to start a Disability company like RDNS by specialising in Disability.
Basically build a company by getting goverment funded contracts, rather then something dumb like mouse pads (lol).

  • buying baby formula here and sell it to china probably a better choice than importing mouse pad from china and sell it here

  • BTW, if you don't enjoy taking care of others, then don't become a nurse. For the amount of hours and stress that you have to put up with, it's not a job that you take for the money.

  • Why is everyone falling for this?

  • sup

  • cash money

  • You can still continue your mouse pad venture and continue uni in nursing.

  • Like everyone else has said - don't quit uni.

I support your desire to become an entrepreneur. It is worth pursuing if you're endowed with half a brain and a couple of good ideas, but you need a degree or some skill to fall back on while it's being built, while it's not doing so well or if it doesn't work at all.

I am also studying in the health field. Use it to your advantage - look for gaps in your field. Devices nurses would appreciate, important tools or even products that nurses and patients would benefit from. Be innovative.

In my field there are several areas where I have noticed that things can be improved. I one day hope to capitalise on this.

And just before I finish - be careful with things like mouse mats. If you don't know 100 people that use them and would buy them from you, don't expect hundreds of thousands to do so.

  • Keep dreaming!

  • i am a 19 year old broke ass nursing student with a dream.

my friend who was up against young Australian of the year for 2016 is doing nursing and runs a first aid service for events especially school formals, after parties etc.

  • No ideas, no qualifications and no education but I am prepared to start at the top! That word entrepreneur gets the blood racing, apparently all you do is knock up an app and then its off to lease a Gulfstream jet via the Porsche Dealership. I am a current entrepreneur who is now having some success after having had several goes at it, all the while having finished 3 degrees and worked full time for the last 25 odd years. The things that I am selling, developing and the benefits I bring to my customers have originated from the experience I gained doing the former. Good luck but hard to see how you make a living selling a commodity in a saturated market. Go find something that others aren't already doing.

I am a former eBay pwerseller, I used to sell bike shorts and skins that I imported and resold before loads of new competitors entered the market and eat into my margins about 7 years ago. I helped my best friend's son setup an eBay shop that he used to pay his way through his engineering degree. It went very well for him, he was selling retro game cartridges for old video game consoles, apparently hipsters were paying big $$ for them. You need to find a niche that isn't already being smashed.

  • Worst comes to worse, you can always sell your arse on oxford st….

  • I don't think you should sell mouse pads. I haven't purchased one in more than 7 years.
