Purchasing Kia Sportage SL MY14 Manufac. Date 1 Dec 2015

I am looking to purchase Kia Sportage

Model: Sportage Sports SL MY14 SI Wagon 5DR SA 6SP 2WD RED
ODO: 59744
Production: 01 DEC 2015
Compliance: JAN 16
Reg Expiry: 23 AUG 2017
From Penrith Dealer
Sale Price: $23500 (negotiated, originally $23,990)
Deposit: $1000
Payment: Cash

Query:

  • Based on online reviews - drives well etc. Is this a good SUV?
  • Is the negotiated price sensible?
  • The dealer has 1 Key ( realised before signing contract), Dealer says 2nd set will cost $430, KIA can't help
  • Logbook is included, What else should i look for before i sign the contract?
  • Paint protection is that something i should look to do it myself or through dealer or any other tips/tricks
  • Which comprehensive insurance should I go for considering my wife and my Australian license is just 2years
  • Which Roadside Assistance? Or Kia is better
  • Should I look at 8.75% Finance i am pre-approved for 4 years?
  • Anything I should consider before I sign the contract?

Consider me a newbie and please get flowing with suggestions
Appreciate your help guys

    A couple of quick points.
I'm sure there is more room to negotiate. ($490 off isn't negotiation, that's nothing)
I'd be only buying a car with two keys. I wouldn't pay for it. Make them include it.
Supply your own finance if required.
    Don't bother with paint protection

Private sale seems to suggest $20-$21K asking price which seems much more realistic. For a car that is only 2 years old I'd have no issues recommending private sale.

    • He negotiated $490 off so the dealer is trying to make it back somehow as such the cost of keys. If he negotiated $800 off, then the dealer will say "sorry this car has no keys and you will need to pay $430 for one set". Jokes aside, I have never come across a new-ish car with only 1 set of keys.

    Don't buy a Kia. Seriously.

Not only is it a shit car, but you negotiated a terrible price, and you the dealer should obviously deduct the price of the key.

Why would you bother with paint protection on a $20k car? Hell, I wouldn't waste the money on a $150k car; if the paint isn't decent quality from the factory, and requires after marker protection, what's the point.

DO NOT BUY WITH ONE KEY

but since you have signed contract, bit of a moot point

in fact, given you have signed a contract, why are you posting?

in fact (number 2), have you signed or not? your post says that you have both signed and not signed…..

  • almost sounds like a repo'd car if only 1 key and relatively new.
It is a pity you realised only 1 key before signing otherwise you can rescind the contract based on dealer not being upfront about keys. If you go ahead and if I were you at this point in time I would push the key situation pretty hard even if you can get half the costs paid by the dealer.

    • otherwise you can rescind the contract based on dealer not being upfront about keys.

      No… You couldn't

    • you can rescind the contract based on dealer not being upfront about keys

That's some mighty fine pseudo legal advice there but it's not overly accurate.

You can't cancel the contract because "the dealer lied about the keys", what you can do is invoke your right to cool off if the given period hasn't expired but if you choose to do that the dealer is legally entitled to keep a percentage of your deposit.

      • I knew someone would have a better idea of the right terminology to cancel. thanks for clearing that up gronk.

an 'MY14' with a build date of Dec 2015 sounds odd in itself - would have thought it be MY16 by then.

    • Nah, the MYXX designation is more of a series designation than anything else it doesn't relate directly to the manufacture date of the vehicle. The MYXX designation is updated when a facelift or new model is introduced.

      • understand all that. My previous Sorento was MY14 with a July 13 build, and Carnival is an MY17 with an Oct 16 build.
Figured that Sportage was more or less similar.

    • Somehow this car has touchscreen multimedia screen - No Navigation. I could not find this on Redbook.

A couple of points in relation to OP's post -

    • The advertised price for that vehicle is too high, Redbook puts the same model at around $17,800 with 50,000kms on it - this vehicle has travelled almost 60,000kms so I'd consider even $20k d/a an upper bound in terms of what the vehicle is worth, at a punt I'd guess they paid somewhere around the $12k mark for it.

    • Check to see if the 60,000km service has been performed, also check to make sure all other services were done on time because this vehicle probably has capped price servicing program applicable to it and if the owner missed or was late for even 1 service you may find the capped price servicing no longer applies. There'll be quite a difference between the Capped service cost and the non-capped service cost.

    • Don't buy paint protection from the dealer, it's sold at a heavy markup and is of no better quality than products you can buy off the shelf at super cheap.

    • Get your own finance quote, and don't negotiate finance based on monthly payments alone.

Personally I'd pass on that particular vehicle at that price, but it's your call.

  • Sorry guys i was not clear enough, i have not signed the contract yet, was about to and then I noticed the 1 Key mentioned

  • Somehow this car has touchscreen multimedia screen - No Navigation though. I could not find this on Redbook. the VIN is KNAPM81AMG7025154
