Which MacBook Air should I purchase secondhand?

Hi, first time poster here.

I have wanted to try the apple ecosystem for a while, now I have $700 that I can spend on a laptop. I've searched online and found some MacBook Airs around that price (500-750).

in terms of price to performance, which MacBook Air should I find for it to worth $700?

Try Linux on your existing machine and use that money fruitfully.

edit for neg: Written from my MacLinux Air

    • I have reasons on why I wanted to try the macbook. I used an iphone as my daily phone, I also had an apple watch. I think for me, the use case of a macbook will greatly increase the user experience of my other devices.

      • It's pretty easy to port things from iphone to Windows…You can get a decent Windows laptop or a used Mac for the same price
        P.S thx for the negs

      • Is there anything in particular that makes you believe your user experience will be any different to your Windows experience in terms of your other devices?

how about itunes? itunes was always laggy in a windows pc. and I still use itunes to sync up my music.

and also the airdrop feature of mac os is really convenient for me, you can share files easily from your iphone/ipad to mac and vice versa.

please correct me if these features are not as convenient as what they said it might be.

        • @Nadesuke: Haven't used iTunes in years, so can't speak for this. If you're still syncing music in 2017, I can imagine it being marginally better on OSX. As for Airdrop, it really depends what you're using it for. It's great for sharing documents with other people without toying with thumb drives, but iOS still doesn't have a proper file explorer which really limits what you'll use it for.

      • I think for me, the use case of a macbook will greatly increase the user experience of my other devices.

Not really. Besides Facetime and iMessage, I can't recall a single case where using my iPhone + MBP offered any advantages over any other combination.

      • Lol I had an iPhone and a Mac book, can't say it improved my experience much apart from being able to receive and send smses from the laptop

    • Using Linux as a desktop OS is not something any sane person does when there's Windows and OSX available. Mainly because they want a computer that works.

I'm sorry. You've enlightened me with your infinite wisdom and I can now see you're an authority on this topic. Please forgive my transgressions.

But what if they want an OS that is free?

        • OsX is now free (I've fresh installed Sierra on half a dozen macs over the last few months)

        • @altomic: For reals? Sweet! Without getting into the licensing debate I have a little more respect for Apple.

        • @kywst: For real

  • I don't know much about macs, but I bought the
    Macbook Air 13inch Early 2015
    Processor 1.6GHz i5
    8gb RAM
    Intel HD Graphics 6000

Cost me just under $1k new from the Dick Smiths deal a while back. I'd imagine at second hand it should be about $700? but I hear Macs keep their value quite a fair bit. But I like it, seems to work quite well, HD storage is a bit small but yeah.

    • wow that's a good bargain especially for 8GB RAM, it's hard to find macbook airs with 8gb of ram out there.

and also I didn't find any macbook air 11 or 13" with an 8gb ram under $700.

Buy a new one, claim it on tax, and sell it after 3 years. Rinse and repeat. Free laptop forever.

  • I'd be looking at something like 8GB RAM since you cannot upgrade anything afterwards (but most likely be 4GB)
256GB SSD if possible (but unlikely - probably will be 128GB)
Something at least from 2012+ (anything before it has support for USB 2.0)

They are all the same in build quality - differences are in the hardware underneath but even then its small incremental upgrades year on year basis from 2012 onwards. Obviously the newer models are better, so work from there.

Then there's the size difference, 11" vs 13"
Major differences are the screen size
    resolution 1366x768 vs 1440x900
    SD card in the 13"
and battery life - but being used, your milage may vary

    • thanks for the info on usb 2. I wouldn't want a device that doesn't support usb 3 in 2017 :D

I also didn't know that the 11" model doesn't have any SD card reader. I might need to search for the 13" model then.
seems like macbook air with 8gb of ram is a rare breed, didn't find any 8gb macbook airs available secondhand.

      • Yeah I'm still holding onto my Macbook AIr 11 (2011). The USB 2.0 speeds are a pain, but I'm holding out until the next Macbook Pro release for this year.

  • hi there,

I finally bought a 2nd hand 13" MBA last month after looking around for a while (on ebay).
I managed to get an immaculate model with 512GB SSD and 8GB RAM for $790 after 5% ebay discount and 2.6% cashrewards cashback at the time.

I think the key is patience. I saw a few rare bargains (especially 8GB RAM models) come and go during my search - even a 2014 13" Retina with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM for $950!

I would strongly recommend a model with 8GB RAM (my wife has an air with 4GB RAM and it's pretty sluggish) - and try to get a mid 2013 model or newer. From what I read, the spec/ performance difference between 2012 and 2013 above is significant.

    Good luck!

  • how about a xiaomi mi air and hackintosh it?

here's a how to guide - note: intel wifi won't work so you'll need a usb wifi dongle
