Has anyone ever used this website www.epicdvdstore.com. Just found a bargin 22 disc box set of 3rd watch for $26.95 US (all 6 seasons). Not sure of postage yet but didn't want to sign up unless i had some feedback first.

  • I'm gonna assume the boxset are counterfeit as hell. Like most of the cheap 'boxset' sites.

  • IMHO, general rule of the thumb for DVD boxsets is that if the prices seem unbelievable and if they are from an unheard of merchant, then save your grief and stay away. Most online DVD stores that sell very cheap boxsets and the like often sell pirated copies.

As for the store itself, firstly it's very worrying that the only way of contacting them is via a web form, which is effectively via email. No contact number, company info, shipping location, etc. And notice how they never mention 'genuine' copy anywhere? They tend to use the phrase 'Excellent video and audio quality' a lot.

Secondly, the domain is very new:

    Registered through: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (http://www.godaddy.com)
    Domain Name: EPICDVDSTORE.COM
    Created on: 30-Jul-10
    Expires on: 30-Jul-11
    Last Updated on: 31-Jul-10

Looking a bit deeper, apparently this guy operates under many different names (classicmediadvd.com, planetdvdstore.com, clickdvdmedia.com, tvdvdbonanza.com, dvduniverse.com). Just by googling reviews on these sites, it's safe to conclude that they're dodgy:

    http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/golden-dvd-c227571…
    http://www.ripoffreport.com/internet-fraud/clickdvdmedia-com…
    http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/click-dvd-media-c2…

So you did a good thing by asking for some feedback first before purchasing. :)

And you just got to love this:

Some of these DVD's haven't even been released yet. How is it possible that you sell them?

There is a section of the American copyright law known as "The Berne Act" that Clearly states: films unreleased in the United States, including original versions of films altered and/or edited for release in the United States, are NOT protected by American copyright; thus, they are considered public domain. The entire purpose of our website is to provide otherwise unavailable films or television shows to the serious collector.

  • WOW, so glad I asked before I went ahead. I would have had no idea about the domain being new etc. I suppose should stick bu the saying 'if appears to be too good to be true - IT USUALLY IS'. Thanks so much.

yup, it's true. The dvd are copied from vhs tapes in most cases. All come from China. My suggestion: STAY AWAY………………

    • Iwas silly enough to purchase from this site and found that the vidos were very dodgy. Any suggestions how to get my money back.

  • I bought a boxset some time ago (not from this site) and it was DVD from TV rips. I was pissed. I invoked paypal and they said, "Sorry cannot help" So I got my credit card company reverse it.

    • why didnt paypal help ?

i always thought they reverse stuff like that, I never done so myself though

      • it has to be "significantly not as described"

        • of so they wont refund bootlegs, shame.

      • "Not as described" refunds are for ebay purchases. so paypal said at that time.
but i think they have changed that policy a few months ago to include all paypal transaction.

  • I am having trouble with my recently purchased set of dvd's.

  • My husband ordered two sets of DVD's from this company on November 1st. We are now December 7th and we still haven't received anything. He gave them our home address for shipping, which is in Ottawa, Canada. According to the link they sent us to track the items, the DVD's were shipped from Kaifeng, China, to Toronto (which is 4 hours away from Ottawa), then back to China, where they want us to pick them up!! I've emailed them back to tell them we want our money back, but they haven't answered (of course). We're going to try and re-coup via the credit card company. Stay away, stay away, stay away!!

from their webpage this says it all
"It is understood by the customer that some of the DVDs sold by Epic DVD Store have been individually compiled from original film stock and public domain wholesaler sources. These sources have an inconsistent level of preservation associated with them. In accordance the playback experienced may vary from movie to movie on any DVD collection purchased. Every effort has been given to maintain true DVD quality, but the customer understands and accepts that some level of imperfection is present in each film and that level of imperfection can vary significantly between films. This means the customer accepts that their may be "pauses" or "skips" present in the playback of any given film. We have made every effort to keep errors to a minimum, but they may still exist. The customer accepts this as part of their set, and as part of owning films directly converted from original film stock."
