Super-Hot Chillies - Where Do You Get Yours?

I'm looking to pick up some really (really really really) hot fresh chillies for the weekend, my local Coles is all out of stock so I'm hoping the OB community can offer a bit of guidance.

In terms of heat level, would be willing to look at anything hotter than a ghost pepper but ideally want Carolina Reapers because I used them in this recipe last time and they were amazing. I've tried variations using a larger amount of Habaneros and the end result doesn't pack quite enough punch.

Can anyone suggest a good (fresh) chilli supplier in Melbourne?

I've been growing These for the past 4 years and only this year have they decided to fruit.
Let me say they are SUPER hot. Well worth the wait. Not sure where you would buy these fresh though. You should start growing.

I also grew these for quite a few years and can confirm they are scorchers.

    • I think the Carolina Reaper only recently pipped the Trinidad Scorpion as the world's hottest chilli so yeah they'd be hot as hell.

The plan is to grow my own, I've collected a few different seed varieties such as Habaneros, Reapers and Birdseye chillis but was waiting until after the colder weather to sprout them - the Reapers especially like a constant 28 - 29C so they sound like they'll be a bit of a challenge.

How do you find yours handle the colder weather? That's my main concern that they'll die off when the temps drop down to 8 - 9 degrees in winter, still not too sure what I can do about that because we don't have a great deal of space indoors for them.

  • If you want to grow your own chilies, they are really easy to grow. You can grab seeds from the following Australian site: chilliseedbank.com.au.

  • There is a Mexican wholesaler near the Tullamarine airport that's pretty good, not sure about fresh ones.

I get them from my backyard, but for carolina reapers, I would have to visit my brother's garden.

They are easy to grow, and my brother has his in an aldi/bunnings green-house.

  • My neighbours are taiwanese and gave me some chilis a few months ago. I have never ever eaten anything as hot as those chilies - they gave me sweats, heart palpitations, yoghurt didn't help, etc.

Growing your own chillies is an excellent way to have fresh food for various recipes. Great food to grow.
