ALDI Mattress $149 - $299 ~ Any Thoughts Please?

On Sat 29th April Aldi are selling mattresses, sold in a box, $149 single up to $299 for king. Link to Queen here —>

Am looking at this for a guest room that gets used weekly. Was wondering if anyone had bought this in a previous special buy, or how this would compare to costco or ikea options? Many thanks.

I haven't seen this mattress in previous/recent sales in the last 12 months, and Google doesn't offer much. There is an "estelle" luxury brand mattress made by King Koil which looks similar in the sense that it has pocket springs and foam core. However, that's where the similarity ends, and the King Koil mattress is priced upto 5 times more than the Aldi mattress.

EDIT: It appears these were last on sale on 2015 under a different brand name "sienna", and the QB size was cheaper! Still can't find any reviews of the mattress.

  • I'm actually wondering how Aldi will pull off the special buys this week. Most of the previous large items are things you assemble from a flat pack or otherwise manageable box. A mattress is a whole other ball game!
(boxed mattress doesn't sound very appealing lol)

    • the boxes have wheels … so you can drag them.

    • They're vacuum sealed & rolled up. Not bigger than the washing machines, dryers, ovens that they had on sale a few weeks ago

      • Is that even good to do with a mattress? Like the below comment, it's just hard to picture, or I'd be a little weary of how it will go after it's unboxed.

        • I saw a video of something similar in the past. Think it kinda slowly inflates once it's unwrapped.

  • To me, they look pretty similar to this mattress: http://www.sleepypanda.com.au/product/sleepy-panda-mattress/

I am curious how they would handle returns of a mattress. Would I just drag the mattress back into store and up to the checkouts?

  • I'm just curious how they fold a pocket spring mattress into a box in the first place and how it doesn't flatten you when you open it!

    43 kgs!? Is that standard?

    • the mattresses are vacuum sealed in plastic, hence everything compresses down and 're-inflates' when you open the bag.

      • I get that for a foam mattress, but can't picture how they do it to one with springs in it? Or do they flatten it and then just roll up like a sleeping bag?

        • Flattening them is one way it can be done - at least with the foam mattress in the video. I guess the same principals would apply for the springs as they too compress.

      • But folding them would possibly damage the springs, most of the box mattresses dont have springs.

Bought 2 in previous sales, not 100% sure if they are the same. The ones we bought are pretty good quality - no complaints, comfortable mattresses.

Comparable to mid-range ikea mattresses we have bought also around the same time. Decent enough for spare room or mattress for the kids IMO.

For the price i think they are a very good buy, compared to alot of other Aldi sale product which i feel most the time these days does not represent as good value as previously.

    • Which ikea ones are you comparing them to?

    • How soft/firm are they?

  • Maybe they're similar to bed-in-a-box?

I purchased the Queen mattress this morning. It's quite firm yet has a soft feel. I think it's quite comfortable and evenly supporting. Can't complain for the price and feels better than the cheapys I've tried from the likes of super amart and fantastic furniture.
If I remember I'll write back after a couple of nights sleep.

    • Can you feel the springs through the top of the mattress?

      • +1

        No you can't.

  • Anyone end up buying one?

    • Yes, I bought a queen. Still in the box though, my family are away. Thanks for the early review. Will post here and review after opening. edit: they were very popular at my local, about 15 people or so at opening looking to buy one.

    • Picked one up also. There's, of course, no way to actually try the mattress out in store before buy - so it was a bit a gamble on comfort. Spent a night on it and I'm pretty happy so far given the price. I'm no mattress expert (re: coils, pocket springs, etc.), so maybe take my comments with a grain of salt. Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge is able to give a comparison to what's on the market?

      • How is the size of the new one compared to the old? My new queen is roughly 10cm short. :/ I'm not sure if it'spossible to exchange for another as stock is likely gone. After a few nights sleep I'm not quite use to it. It's more on the firmer side compared to my old mattress, and I may buy a mattress topper to hopefully help out. My wife hasn't slept well since the purchase and finds it too hard.

Photo of my mattress size too short.

        • I didnt have an issue with sizing, because I picked up the bed frame as well. It fit together.
Did you check whether the bed frame you have is the same queen size, as they can vary between regions. Ive seen non-Australian-sizing sold here before.

        • Have you given it at least 48 hours to fully expand?

        • @Ryanek: yea it's well over 48 hours.

  • We bought a king size one last year and it's fine 12 months on. We also bought the matching bed but had to replace the slat system with solid 22mm plywood which gives a really nice firm base for the mattress.

I can sleep on anything but my wife suffers from a bad back and is happy with it.

  • Mine was dirty out of the box. The so called customer support stuffed me up for over a week before responding that my only remedy is returning to aldi on my own expense for a refund. Disgusting.

    • That's interesting as they all claim returned mattresses are not resold, sounds like you got a previously returned mattress

  • my queen mattress was good. the bed was a bad buy. cheap materials. poor labelling for parts. 2 rods with missing holes made us sleep on the floor for a month now before we got the parts. 'uncle bills is not aldi but a subcontractor who is unaccountable to aldi who don't want to know. a bad experience. there are cheaper beds for this poor low tech substitute from normal or online bed retailers. don't have a car so could not return the bed. the mattress may be good value.

    • I agree uncle bills are terrible.
It took a combination of 10+ calls and 4 emails to resolve the dirty matttress situation. They ended up picking it up and I went to Aldi and got my refund. I ended up buying a Marce Blanc mattress from eBay for $300 and it's much better than the Aldi one including being free of stains and dirts.

      Aldi Fail

      • so can I ask them to pick up my bed instead? would let me get my money back without having to deliver it to aldi without a car. who did you use on ebay? my mattress was fine so I will keep it. just the bed is so poorly constructed I am annoyed with ALDI using their good name to trust them.

        • I argued that there was no way to tell if mattress was stained and dirty until I unpacked it. Then I emailed Aldi and demanded they compensate me for the cost of hiring a ute to take the item back to them inline with Fair Trade NSW regulations as the item will no longer fit in a car once unpacked. Persistence over 2 weeks time paid off.

  • Mattress is soft and comfy and feels like a good qualityone BUT this mattress has proved that all comfy things are actually Toxic. The day when I openned the packaging my whole house smelt of a cocktail of industrial chemicals, even after nearly 2 months the mattress and bedroom still stink of these toxic chemicals.
And then i wake up in the morning feeling tired, I think my lungs and body is overworked because.of these chemicals.

If they knew it is for household use, they should have taken precautions to air the mattress and let the vocs escape before packing it.

The dept of health should ban all such products with industrial chemicals causing cancers. Its a known fact that chemical are causing cancers.

    • No issue with smells with my Aldi Estelle Queen opened and airing today.

Read your comment and had the windows and fan going during the unboxing though!

  • For those who posted and enjoy their Estelle Aldi bed, can you please help me out?
How many hours/days did you wait from unpacking before sleeping on it?
What height has your (Queen/size) bed expanded to?
How long has it been since your purchase and do you still enjoy it?

    Thanks :)

    • I brought one today, purchase is really easy, the wheels allow the box to roll while standing on its end so you don't take up a massive amount of space at the checkout. Easily fits in Mazda 3 hatchback.

Springs seem firm with a soft foam topping. The mattress will only work one way up as the bottom is just a thin cover for the springs. The edges of the mattress don't seem to have enough support for sitting on edge of the bed but center is very firm.

It's out on the balcony airing now, has the smell that you get with new foam products, which I don't believe is healthy to inhale. I may give it a few days before bringing it in to sleep on.

  • Thanks minkis!

I can confirm the description of firm springs with (thin) soft foam topping. Mine didn't have a smell but ditto on the rest. No issue for me sitting on the edge of the bed though I am only ~46kgs but yes it does still dip a little compared to my previous mattress.

Do you think you could measure the height of your mattress? I was hoping for 27cm+ but seem to be achieving only 25cm tops. Ah well…

Not sure how big your balcony is but it's good for any mattress to be horizontally flat so it doesn't put unnecessary pressure on a side of springs.
