Getting points while paying with points - possible?

Hi,

So far i was on the impression that if I pay for my flight using points I dont earn miles and/or status credit. But when i started looking how to use my amex 100k pts i found out that different websites have different rules - some allow to earn points and some not. That post was from 2012 and i couldnt find any additional info by googling.
Could someone confirm that it is possible and which sites do you use when paying with points (which ones usually have th best value for points etc). Any other hints for using (amex) points are also welcome.

    My experience has been to assume you'll get no points from a reward points booking, with any points earned a pleasant surprise.

    Two times this might differ are with part points/part cash payments (more likely with hotels than flights in my experience), and 'anyseat' reward fares which book into a points/status credit earning fare bucket. Though you need to be very 'points-rich' to book these fares consistently!
