CarNextDoor - What Do You Think?

I am currently in need of a car, and considering if CarNextDoor would be a good idea to help with the expenses.

Facts:

There are so many variables, like demand in my suburb (which isn't in their guaranteed list), times I have the car available, etc.

Cost = $60 per month, which includes cost of comprehensive insurance and roadside assistance for me. ($500 excess for at fault accidents, $0 for renters accidents)

Income = $25-$40 daily, plus $0.25 per km travelled. (50% of first $240, and 75% of subsequent income)

I work part-time, commuting on public transport. I don't use the car from Sunday afternoon till Wednesday afternoon.

There seems to be good reviews from both users and owners on productreview - http://www.productreview.com.au/p/car-next-door.html

My thoughts:

I haven't chosen a car yet, so I am considering if I should buy a small hatch (2-4 years old) for personal use $14k, or an older car (4-6 years) $10k so wouldn't be as concerned about any damages on CarNextDoor.

I think the monthly cost of $60 is reasonable considering it covers the cost of comprehensive insurance and roadside assistance. $720 seems very reasonable sum to pay for that. Without this, I'm almost certain that would cost more than the $720. $500 excess is also reasonable for as a lot of car insurance policies seem to offer $1000 excess for discount.

Product Review is a website where anyone can sign up and create a review which means it's worthless.

And if you go and look right now there's a whole bunch of 5 out of 5 reviews that are written with the same short sentence style and positively gushing about how amazeballs it was to use.

Diji1, You are so right. Plus users who have left the 5 star reviews are all new users and have only left the one review. Looks very suss.

Imo way too much of a headache. Too many things can be done with the car that you wouldn't immediately notice

  • I've borrowed using CND and it was fine, but it was a last resort because our first choice is usually goget or rental as the cars are usually newer. Maybe check to see if gogets are in the area, because that might reduce the demand for your car?

Was considering sharing my car, but ended up selling it instead.

Sharing I think (like you have already sort of said) - as long as you are comfortable with strangers driving your car
    - you don't share a brand new car
    - know there is a risk of increased wear and tear/damage
    - happy to have to book your own car when you you want to use it or risk not being able to use it if already booked

It would be a risk in terms of income I suppose if you are not in a guaranteed area, but if you check their map and can see lots of borrowers nearby, you would think it would be fine???

You can always cancel if you don't get any income to cut your losses.

  • I've only ever used Car Next Door once. But that was for a van to move a sofa.. Have you considered a van or ute? Those vehicles would be regularly hired out because CND allows one to hire them for hours instead of days like regular hire companies (with the exception of a few like goget etc.). I found it to be much much cheaper than hiring a vehicle for the day when in reality I only needed it for 2 hours.

    • how did you find the experience.
I just joined looking to hire a van every few months

      • I found it good. It was easy to get a vehicle at short notice, didn't have to fill in any paperwork or speak to anyone. Would reattend.

  • Thanks. on second thoughts, its not such a great idea is it?

Using someone else's car occasionally is one thing, but to have to let other people drive my car requires me to trust them a fair amount.

    • did you end up hiring your car out through CND? What is your review?

      • I didn't proceed in the end. Too much uncertainty, and I suppose I am the kind who would lend things to friend, but don't quite trust strangers.

  • I used this to rent a van for a day. It cost me 134 AUD including fuel.

  • I would avoid CND, their customer service is terrible when something goes wrong.

  • old car and need the money, yes, new car and just not using it often, no way.

  • I have tried and tried and tried again, this time it is time to say it all.

I started car next door early, few years ago now and can speak with enough background I think :

I had a car written off by a borrower and then had no car for weeks, it wasn't worth it.

I have had my cars parked illegally many and been fined, I had to go to the police office to sign forms and forms and also had my car left tank empty for me to go to work with no compensation, not worth it.

I had my cars, bumped in, scrapped, trashed, smoked in, race driven, broken, opened and jumped started, parts have been lost and god knows what else, not worth it.

I have received reviewed, lots of reviews, lots of good ones, and the bad ones ? Well I care for my cars, I do service them on time, I clean them and I repair them carefully. But I am being told it's my fault if the last borrower left the tank empty, or if the battery has died ? Well that hurts, and that's not worth it.

And the work ? Not only did I have to clean all the disgusting things that a minority of borrowers have left in my car, from food scraps and beer cans to dog hairs(do I need to precise that pets I didn't allow pets on my profile ?) but also I should apparently have had a look at my car after every borrower, this is to see all the little scratches !! Not easy in winter when you come back from work at night time. Because of that, my two cars have suffered diverse injuries and have sometimes been repaired, but mostly not , many times I have been told car next door couldn't repair this dent or that mirror a borrower had broken for different reasons, there is always a reason, it shows in their last pictures, it's not big enough etc. Not worth it

And there is worse than that, my cars have been mishandled by not all but just a hand of band borrowers among the majority of good ones. Mechanical issues have become more common and raised over the years due to missuses. I have seen it, I have bills, this all I I can't see because I am not a mechanic, this is all those times I should have, every three borrowers ( I got up to 5 in a day) gotten under my car and checked everything, ridiculous, and, Not worth it.

When I started, my cars were not immaculate but clean very clean, and worth something. Being used without consideration everyday, it's not the case anymore, they have scratches, they smell, they are showing so much more wear and tear than any of the cars I have had before, and my cars are now NOT WORTH A DOLLAR ANYMORE, and that, that's really not worth it.

So, I am not saying, don't try, maybe you will be more lucky than me, maybe your neighborhood is better, maybe, I don't know. And, it helps, it almost pays for the running cost of the cars, not all, but certainly some of it.
However, I am saying it's important to be aware that there is a lot more to it that one could think initially, and it counts too. Living in the place where all the free green, yellow, orange and red bikes have disappeared due to an disrespectful, underestimated minority, I am skeptical

On my side, this is it, I am leaving Carnextdoor, but I hope for the best, It would be to sad to let such a good idea go to waste.
    Goodbye carnextdoor.

  • I was accused of damaging a vehicle and it's been 5 months and they're still ' looking into it' hopeless service and a suspect company in my opinion.

  • I used one of your vans and I captured a damage just above the rear wheel as per the photo ( photo 1) . But it didn’t capture the whole area of the van but the damage was continued until the rear lights. So the owner and Car Next Door took it as an opportunity and spray painted the damage we captured and kept the uncaptured area as it is. Now Car next Door says we didn’t capture any damage ( photo 2 &3 sent by car next door)and I have been charged 500$.

    Be careful everybody…

  • Broken my Driver side front door during installation and just walked away!

I tried to use this service as car owner for first time but ended up with a nightmare! I own 2012 Holden Commodore Equipe.

Someone named Scott from their installing team came for installation. During inspection he banged the driver side front door and damaged it (I witnessed it). When I wanted to stay there as he was roughly handling the car (due to his hurry on other jobs), he wanted me to leave car with him for his inspection/installation as it would take 1 hr and stressed on me to leave the spot. After he broke the door, he simply stated it was existing before and tend to escape from his mistake, and walked away without addressing the problem despite of my concerns, though he would certainly knew it was not existing before!

This installer had refused to give me his details and flew away without any response. Then I had to chase with his manager about this concern. It looks like his manager had given him these instructions to fly away even after he heard about the damage that has happened to the car!

Now the car is not drivable due to front door simply not lock (it flip opens automatically when moving the car). I end up spending more money on hiring other cars whenever needed, as the escalation team work on their own pace! No professional ethics and customer service. I will have to keep waiting for their next response without any clue and end up multiple reminders with no luck.

So I am finding them bit dodgy in this business, so I would warn anyone look for utilizing their service!

  • My car has been on CND for over a year now.

During this time, yes I've made decent revenues, but the stress and lack of support from CND has been horrible, particularly in the last few months as more and more of their services are trying to be automated or outsourced. In addition, I'm likely to be left with a final repair bill that will cost more than the profits I've made over the year with CND.

Depending on your luck (mine has been hopefully just terrible in relation to everyone else's) but I've had at least 1 speeding fine a month. While these should normally just be a speedy online form, which you are compensated for - every now and then you luck out and the borrower can't be identified or similar, and you are left to deal with all of this.I even had to go to court to argue one particularly difficult case, and I still have 2 fines that finesVIC have not resolved.

Throughout all this, minimal support from CND.
The only support I did have was from an "owner support team" - which seemed to be based in Australia and were pretty helpful. However, I can't seem to get in touch with them anymore, which bodes poorly for the future car owners on this platform.

Much worse however, is WHEN (not if) your car is damaged.
Initially, this started off as an email to the team, who would then begin the process.
This process has always been excruciatingly slow, exacerbated by woefully incompetent staff who can take weeks to respond to a simple query, only to ask for more pictures and information.
It's now significantly more difficult, as you need to fill out an online template form - which is not even app compatible.

However, the most difficult part remains trying to (in vain) keep track of all the different damage borrowers cause to your car and stay on top of the repairs that CND do not support or conduct in time.
As such, it's incredibly difficult to tell what damage has just been caused - and if you let one slip for more than 45 days (highly likely when you work full time and have 5+ other CND tickets of damage or speeding fines to damage at one time) - CND will no longer support you and you are fully liable.

There are no systems on CND to keep track of your tickets and damages. You need to somehow, keep track of whats been damaged, and to what extent.

In the case of severe, unpredictable damages (my windshield wiper housing was severely damaged by a borrower - quite inexplicably) - CND likely will just tell you "this is normal wear and tear" - even if the same suspected culprit left needles all over your car.

All in all, this experience has not been worth it for me. It has made me lose my faith not only in the CND Platform but also in humanity's ability to treat shared property with respect.

I'll be getting my final repair done ASAP, paying off the final repair bill out of my own pocket, and then removing my car from the platform as quickly as I can.

  • I think if you import a 10 year Toyota Crown Comfort ex-taxi from HK for $3,000 and got plenty of second hand cheap spares ready. It could be a good option to explore.

Further to that, add a hidden 24/7 indoor and outdoor cam and you will be well covered.

Most of the problem with owners is that the users trash/ruin their precious car. This won't be a problem if you have a 10 year old Toyota ex-taxi from HK.
These Toyotas has been solid as a tank, done over 400,000 kms and still going strong.

    • Be a lot easier/cheaper to buy a commodore, falcon or Camry.
