After finished half a bottle of this stuff, the spelling looks perfect to me ;)

      • +3

I get the same affect with my wife

        • +4

She drinks half a bottle and then you look perfect to her?

    • +1

      apologies, i should know better.
had to click post as someone was over my shoulder.

  • This price is great. I used boozle.com.au last week and there were no comparable bargains to be found.

  • You want to add cashrewards benefit too.!!!

    • and of course, 5% off eGift cards too

  • Good price. If you are a Chivas Person, it is better in terms of taste taken u mix it with ice or water or soda. If u mix it with coke/pepsi, you should save money and get red label or similar ones
Green label for $63 is a good price for single malt 15 yo blend as well.

    • Red label is only $4 cheaper. Better off having this in your cupboard and mixing with soda or coke or whatever!

      • lol. Forgot about RL's expensive price many times. Also check the size as sometimes RL bottle you look is 1 or 1.2 litre.

        • I think Red Label works out to about $42-44 a litre.

        • @bargain_knight: What's so good about Johnnie Red, an unaged blend? Flavour is from how much wood essence is extracted into the whiskey. $38 subtract cashrewards and woolies gift cards is not a bad price. I remember the First Choice staff didn't check those spend $50 get $10 off discounts, got Dimples 12yo and Johnnie Black for $29 lol!

        • +1

          @lovepeoplenotmoney:
I think you are making the same point I am. Gaggy initially said you should get red label if you want to mix it with coke. My point was that Red Label is no cheaper than this. So this is better.

        • +1

@bargain_knight: yeah I supported your point, sorry I replied under your response because I thought the relevancy was appropriate. Johnnie Red is their entry level unaged blend so there's nothing special about Red label other than it's cheaper than green, blue, black, etc

    • "single malt .. blend"? Uh, sure.

  • Anyone know why Australia has 700ml bottles for spirits when the rest of the world have 750ml?

    • +1

What are you calling "the rest of the world"? The USA? They don't even make Whisky.

For spirits 700ml is the EU standard. This includes Scotland, where Whisky is made.
(It has been that way since 1990.)
So basically the whole of Europe, including the UK, sells Whisky in 700ml bottles.

      • American whiskey
Thirteen large distilleries owned by eight companies produce over 99% of the whiskey made in the U.S.[2]

@Nonverbose: Yeah, you owned the point but could also have owned the point by embedding the link

        • +3

@lovepeoplenotmoney: nobody ever reads the link. I'm glad this person laid the smack down on someone saying something stupid, which is a bargain at any price.

          They make Whiskey, not Whisky.

    • Eg; So when Liquor Land decide to offer the 750ml for $40, dan murphy will not be forced to lower there price to $39 for there 700ml. Dan Murphy is promising us the lowest liquor prices(T&C APPLY).

how does this compare tastewise to Johnny Walker Black Label ?

    • +1

I would say that this is a proper step up form the JW Black.

    • It is a little better than JW black or Chivas 12yo in its category. But normally it is a little expensive compared to two and is a blended scotch as well.

  • Dame, they got so many of these in stock (Eastwood, NSW) What is going on to the Scottish whiskey maker? are they loaded?

  • I'd get a Monkey Shoulder over this any day, YMMV though.

    • At the same price, maybe…but it's full $10 more at the moment.

      • I mean, tastes differ, Dimple is yuck for me, looks like Ozb community finds it good though.

        • "Yuck" is a bit strong… Haven't heard anyone describe it like that. Besides, remember that we're talking the under $40 Scotch here. JW Green Label is my favourite blended Scotch and, to me, tastes better than Monkey Shoulder but it also costs more. It's hourses for courses, really.

I've had my share of prized single malts and I'm an Islay man myself, but I do find Dimple quite nice for an evening sip and much better than JW Black and Chivas Regal, which used to pop up at this price once in a while.

  • How do people rate the Aldi Scotch's?

    • -1

As per above comment, "Do Germans even make whiskey?"

      • He asked about Aldi Scotch, not Aldi German. It's a reasonable question that I'm also interested in.

        • I must be getting Trolled or the urge of the internet is strong for me not to reply.

Aldi is German. So do Germans even make whiskey?

        • @Jake Elwood:

Dan Murphy's is Australian, you know the rest…

        • @ryzza22: I thought it was Irish. Now I know that they don't make Whiskey.

    • Cheaper one is similar to Red label, if you are happy to mix with coke or soda.

      • I'm a neat drinker and have always thought that the Red label tasted like medicine. Have you tried any of their mid-range blended or single malt scotch and how does it compare to the popular similarly priced stuff?

        • Red Label is too strong for neat. It needs dilution by coke or water. Black Label is better, but still little strong like Chivas. Good to mix with little soda or water or ice.
I have tried green label and will say it is pretty good. I like it over Glenfiddich or can rate it similar. It has complex sweet taste and is nice.

For neat drinker, you don't want to go below Glenfiddich or Glenlivet (unfortunately no production now was my favourite) 12yo or Green Label for single malts or Gentleman Jack for US one.
Dimple, you might be able to drink neat. It is sweeter than Chivas, but does have little strong flavour.

A new drop I tried was Amrut Whisky ( expensive one at Dan's site). It is pretty good as well.

        • @Gaggy: I beg to differ with your definition of 'strong'. I actually like them strong.

However, an example of 'strong' to me is the 10 year old Ardbeg (46% alcohol content). Years ago, I really enjoyed drinking it while watching Deadwood - it matched the gritty vibe of that show very well.

Another, shorter word comes to mind (also starting with an 's') to describe Red Label. People drink it with coke to hide the horrible taste. I don't find black label strong at all, if anything it's a bit bland to my tastes. Chivas Regal is a little nicer but I'd pick Dimple over both of these any day.

BTW, Lagavulin is my go to scotch for special occasions.

        • @elektron: I was not referring strong as the alcohol %. Strong was the strong fumes or flavour that makes it taste bitter. Like Smirnoff Vodka has strong taste neat as well.
I like Dimple over BL or CR as well.

        • @Gaggy: Yes, I too was talking about the amount of flavour that hits you, rather than the straight alcohol content, as most whiskies are the standard 40%

        • @elektron: Amrut has 50%. Just saying :). Nice drop to try. Hopefully it goes down in price sometime.

        • @Gaggy: You got me intrigued - will keep an eye out :-)

I can certainly recommend the Ardbeg - the cheapest it's been was $68 before last year's Father's Day.
