Why do small TVs cost so much?

So I bought this TV in 2013 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/128250 and it's time for another 32" for another bedroom.

Prices for a branded 32" TV with CEC etc are over $450.

What's going on? AU dollar going down? Lack on competition since Dick Smitch closed? Will amazon change things?

  • a 32" gva, JVC, Akai, TCL, etc are all from $199-250 delivered on ebay

  • +1

55" panels are mass produced (more demand), therefore costs are lower now?

  • Dick Smitch.

    • Koghan

      • Tardy.

    • Sounds painful.

  • TV's that are smaller aren't necessarily going to be any cheaper to make - they still have all the same costs of producing all the parts, fitting them together, shipping them round the world, marketing and stocking them etc. In truth they're probably less popular than the larger TVs so they would probably produce and sell less of them. Less competition can lead to higher prices and customers have less choice. Some parts might even be more expensive to fit into a smaller unit.

  • Yeah, it's weird. Noticed on amazon US the prices are much more in line with what you would expect… not here

  • Are you looking at 1080p 32" TVs instead of 720p?

  • Nah 720 will do

    • there used to be heaps of cheap usb $200 china 32" 720p screens around xmas but seems to be a dead zone for a while

the action seems to be 42" FHD really and i would expect $300 is possible
