Japan: IIJmio data SMS and Lumia 532

Folks,
Just lobbed into Japan and an early stop is at BIC Computer
to pick up an IIJmio "Japan Travel SIM (1GB / 30days)" for JPY2656 (incl tax)
just for SMS, Google etc use with my unlocked Lumia 532
(OzB Woolies $39 last year, but as it's not sold in Japan it doesn't make the IIJmio supported device list).

Anyway I plugged in the APN settings like
APN: iijmio.jp
Username: mio@iij
Password: iij
Authentication: PAP
and set the "Manual internet APN" to ON

I activated the card at https://t.iijmio.jp/s/,
powered the phone off/on but the "active network" (NTT DOCOMO-NTT DOCOMO)
doesn't seem to be connecting …
eg. Internet Explorer gives "We're having trouble displaying this page"
and messaging gives "Can't send" ?

I can logon to the hotels WiFi and access smh.com.au, google etc just fine.

Q) Has anyone used this combination (IIJmio and Lumia 532) in Japan ? Any thoughts ?

  • Your best bet:

IIJ Support Center is available year-round
    9:00 - 19:00 / TEL: 03-5205-4999
*Customer support is available in Japanese, English, and Chinese only.

Call from your hotel room phone? I have a feeling that they will say Nokia is not supported.

  • It is absolutely necessary to put in the APN settings? I have not used a foreign sim card in the last couple of years that requires me to do that. Maybe try to clear the settings, restart the phone and let the network do its own thing.

    • @KaTst3R … the instructions (https://t.iijmio.jp/en/apn/index.html
for IOS and Android) do say to put in the APN
but Lumia is Micro$oft so I still put them in.

I cleared the APN settings by setting "Manual Internet APN" to OFF,
powered off/on however "Active network" still reports "no network found"
(and the APN settings etc that I previously entered are now blank).

A test SMS still reports "Can't send".

Yes, I could ask IIJmio Support but I have the vague idea
      that they'll say it's not a supported device …

ps. SIM cards should be OS-independent, yes ?

      • It could be a case of phone not support as pantsparty mentioned. Unfortunately I cant be of much help.
