Flying Cheap to Cape Town

Hey guys,

Need to go to South Africa later this year (cape Town) around mid-late september and looking for a one way ticket, was wondering if anyone has figured out to travel there cheaply as the cheapest one way flight is about 1k which seems ridiculous for the distance…

Thanks,

    Where are you flying from?

    • Syd

  • Sorry I can't see much better than $1000, though you can get to Joburg for cheaper. I think you're losing out because it's a one way ticket

    • Yeah Thanks mate. It seems to be the case but to me it was just oddly high so I thought maybe I'm doing something wrong. But I guess it's just because it's a route with low demand so service's charge a fair bit.

  • Well you can use 60k Qantas points ($600 from the forums) plus $385 in taxes making it just under $1000 flying Qantas/Emirates.

From Sydney? Well it doesn't really matter, 'cause here's what you're gonna do.

And I've decided you're going to holiday in India and visit a friend in Johannesburg.

So first you'll have to get your visa to India somehow. I have no idea how much it is these days or the process but let's say it's gone up to around $80.

First you fly to Kuala Lumpur from Sydney (or better) using that 20% off code (WEMISSU) for around $190. Probably still have much cheaper flights in August but September it is.

Then for around $100 you fly to Mumbai or wherever else you really want to see in India. You have some food (and possibly stomach problems for two weeks) and then you make your way to Mumbai for your flight to Johannesburg. It's normally cheap to Johannesburg with Rwandair or Kenya Airlines (Emirates is normally over $100 more), but you could often go for around $290 with Rwandair (1 October with Tripsta via Skyscanner).

Then you fly for under $100 to Cape Town.

So your total savings will be (less than) $0 but you'll have $200 spending money for Kuala Lumpur and India…

Thanks for your useless comment. Wasn't asking for anyone to plan me a holiday.

      Thanks. This was quite interesting.

  • Cathay Pacific just released a Joburg deal but for before July: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/305654
