DIY muesli

I've been spending a fortune on store-bought muesli. Could have been saving some serious scratch by making my own muesli mix. How do you do it? Where do you get ingredients? Any recipes, tips?

  • Rolled oats (mix in some other grains for variety, e.g. triticale, barley, wheat), sultannas (or other dried fruit like rasins, dates, pears, peaches, apricots, prunes for variety), nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews, etc.). I add a bit of psyllium. You could add sweeteners like honey; I don't. Then top with fresh or tinned fruit, yogurt and (soy) milk as desired. I don't premix as it only takes a minute to assemble and I can vary the mix each time according to whim. Everything here can be found in a supermarket or grocer, but psyllium will be cheaper at a pharmacy.

Have you considered using bird feed?

  • We make a variation of https://www.lifestylefood.com.au/recipes/27/blueberry-and-al…

You can bake or leave the oil and apple juice out for raw muesli

Can add in other seeds/nuts, we sometimes add/substitute in cashews, pecans, honey, maple syrup, flax seed, dried cranberries, dates, rice bran oil. We also chop up the nuts a little so they are a bit easier to chew. You may need to make some small batches and experiment with the ingredients first.

    For ingredients:
Costco is good but need to buy in big packets/containers
https://www.royalnutcompany.com.au found this place recently and nuts are of good quality better than woolies or local fruit shop
https://www.farmhousedirect.com.au if you want more organic/specialised stuff but is pricier
Some health food stores will have cheap ingredients but more likely to stock up when we see it then hunting around for them

We make 4/6 times the recipe at a time and spend one night prepping and baking. Then store it in a big Sistema container.

Try Aldi museli - hard to make cheaper with the time involved.

  • I make something similar to this http://www.clairekcreations.com/2012/06/macadamia-toasted-mu…

But I use almonds instead of macadamias (cheaper) and also add 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil. I like it because it uses apple juice as a sweetener. If you PM and ask nicely I will send you my recipe when I get home later.

  • Is this how musli bats are made too
