        ~$67.62 shipping for a 6gm ring?

  • $205.24 shipped to Australia. US dollars, I assume? You need to include that information in the title.

whats the grading on the tanzanite used?

I mean im only asking because you can pick up a vs-vvs at .45 oval at about 20 USD. that's retail price direct from traders.

14ct white is about 22 USD per gram at the moment… and that's being generous.

even at the maximum weight of the ring which you mentioned to be 6 grams that's 132 USD at retail value without labour. mind you carat weight hasn't the same effect on price for a tanzanite as it would on say more precious stones like diamonds or saphs or rubys n shit

since this seems to be a pretty typical cast design from pre-existing moulds there shouldn't be that much in terms of labour.

locally a jewellery would charge 20 AUD to put a stone in a ring like this. this is including ensuring the tips/claws are secure.

so as advertised on the site with

    Our price: $413.99
    Offer Price: $206.99

I just find it really hard to understand how this is a bargain.

Hey, sorry to go on a tangent but what cost to set a stone like this and buy the band too locally. I have a stone but quoted ridiculous prices to set it. Could you suggest a place/s? Also can you buy a cheap thing like this and take a risk popping out the stone and setting your own of similar shape a weight? Cheers.

      • general "retail" in Australia can cost upwards of 50 bucks for a stone set depending on what style of set youre looking at with additional for white gold for the rhodium plating. Only reason is they check literally everything and in return work on everything that has anything to do with the setting itself with regards to tips or claws to make sure the setting is 100% and return the ring to you in the most pristine condition as possible.

Most of the time the jewellers do more work on the ring itself because if anything happens to what they worked on the consumer can always put the blame on the jeweller even though in most cases the fault may not be the jewellers.

Keep in mind dimensions of a stone is a big factor, too the specific measurements of the setting in the ring.

You cant barter with a lot of commercial jewellery shops who sub contract the work to private jewellers, but you can with direct private jewellers. Problem in this instance is that not a lot of private jewellers advertise their services commercially as in most cases they already have an abundant amount of jobs and contracts with suppliers and retailers.

For example if you had a 9ct yellow gold 6 claw rub over traditional solitaire ring (only, no stone) from mould made for a .5ct RBC stone, and a .5ct RBC stone with a certified excellent component most jewellers/stone setters would be able to pop in the stone in less than 30 minutes for about 20 bucks, taking into consideration they know exactly where the ring is made and how well its made so they wouldn’t need to redo the whole bloody thing just so theyre not held liable if something busts after they’ve returned the ring to you.

One thing that screws aussies is the labour cost. These guys go through a fair bit of education and experience to be able to charge so much commercially… and trust me when I say they rarely undercut eachother, offering mates rates only if they know you. General rule of thumb. A lot of retailers charge. 1.8 times what theyre paying to these subcontractors for their work.

Best advice would be to shop around. Lots and lots of shopping around. Next option would be to ask family and friends if they know a good jeweller. With that being said, just keep in mind the term jeweller is still a very broad term on what exactly they do.

Some things just don't belong on Ozbargain.

  • Why does the title say …

    $50 Shipping (US$50)

… when the product page says …

    Free Shipping on all Orders.

… at the top like every other page?

  • +1

Negging due to major issue with retailer. The title charges Associated OP's fellow OzBargain members ~$67.62 Shipping for …

The ring weighs from 5.5 to 6.0 grams.

… an item weighing 6g maximum despite the product page and every page on OP's website clearly stating …

    Free Shipping on all Orders.

… although everybody comprehends the phrase "all Orders". Associated OP is entirely aware his 13th OzBargain post employs this unethical marketing ploy.

It is also very easy to find cheaper tanzanite items which would lead to arguments about quality, grading and product knowledge, being essentially a dispute of value vs. opinion. Such inevitability is presumably a core reason OzBargain's FAQ for merchants declares this category shouldn't be posted, or as Member WatchNerd correctly opines …
