Suggest a Credit Card?

I'm thinking of getting a new credit card for my partner who doesn't have one.

I'm currently using a Westpac Platinum which will provide free travel insurance (albeit pretty crappy, but all I want is the emergency health cover).

We travel once (or twice max) a year for a couple of weeks (or more) overseas. There is some spending online, so possibly foreign currency charges there too.

I was thinking of the Bankwest Zero Platinum, but with our usage I'm not sure if focusing on a travel-focused card is that important. Perhaps there are better offers? Was also looking at the Coles with their claimback for any price reduction.

More info:
We pay off all CC debt - no outstanding loans, credit transfers, etc.
Usage - typically 1k a month, unless on holidays/large purchases. Safe to say 15k/year.

Just wanting to hear any thoughts.

  • Is there anything you don't like about your current credit card? If no, why don't you consider just getting a supplementary card under yours.

    • Nothing wrong with my current card. I was hoping to get the best of 2 different cards.

ie: use mine to get the insurance, and when we're overseas use "hers" for the superior rates.

travel insurance is only for principal card holder.

for superior exchange rates: Bankwest Zero Platinum is a good card. Used it overseas and the rates were good with no transaction fee. if u don't want a good exchange rate card, you can opt for Citi Plus account for awesome exchange rate for overseas withdrawal.

Travel insurance by my card will cover my partner. I studied the fine print :D. Or at least I thought I did.

        • Bankwest Zero also covers family members incl de facto.

        • @CMH:

does your ticket always cost you over $500 each person ?

"at least A$500 has been spent on each of their prepaid travel costs (i.e. their travel costs that they pay for before leaving Australia, which includes the cost of their return overseas travel ticket; and/or airport/departure taxes; and/or their prepaid overseas accommodation/travel; and/or any other of their prepaid overseas itinerary items)"

        • @phunkydude:

My current card already gives me insurance, and yes I do spend the 500 quite easily between the 2 of us.

Sounds like the bank West is the one I'm going for.

The Bankwest Zero is great, I highly recommend it. I used to recommend the Amex Platinum Edge but switching from a free flight to a travel credit makes it not worthwhile for me. I also normally have a CC from the big 4 depending on who has recently given out free points. The Commonwealth Bank Platinum/Diamond card is very good as you can get travel insurance without actually spending any money on the card, you just have to activate it before you leave.

    • Edit, posted on the wrong post LOL

Sounds like I'm going for bank West.
