32" 2k monitor: ViewSonic VX3209-2k Vs AOC Q3279VWF8

Hello everyone.

As you might guess from the subject of this post, I'm looking to buy a 2k monitor and would like to know what you guys and girls think.

Main use will be work related (charts, spreadsheets, terminal windows, etc… usually with very small characters) and browsing.

Given the screen size (both are 31.5"), and the fact that I'll be sitting quite close to it, my main concerns would be ghosting and viewing angles - unfortunately I haven't found any of these available in stores in my area yet, so I don't know what they look like in real life.

Both monitors mentioned are usually around $399 everywhere, and they have similar warranty and dead pixel policies.

I'd consider a 2k 27" or a 4k 32" (N.B. I don't have a video card that can support 4k at the moment, so I'd need a very cheap one) but I haven't found anything that's better value for money, so happy to hear what you people suggest and/or any deals I haven't spotted.

Video cards I currently have include:

pc1: gigabyte mobo/i7 2700k integrated graphics (this is the pc I use for movies, browsing, entertainment, and connected to the tv).

pc2: hp z600 with a choice of nvidia nvs 450 or quadro fx 570 - this pc will be connected to the new monitor. I might connect pc1 to the monitor as well, but I'm not sure at this stage.

One feature in favor of the AOC one is that is has a dual link DVI connector, besides the vga/hdmi/dp that the Viewsonic also has.

  • From what I read online, main differences are
The ViewSonic is a IPS monitor, so on paper, it should give better viewing angles. The ViewSonic has a VESA mount option if thats important for you in the future.

The AOC however is a VA panel, so viewing angles in theory arent the best (but claims 176 degrees, which I don't understand for a VA) compared to IPS, BUT has better contrast ratio (deeper blacks) which is better for movies. Also its more of a "gaming monitor" with its freesync if you're into that, but I doubt it with your graphics cards.

Specs wise, I'm leaning towards the AOC but I don't think you would be disappointed with either for your workflow.

  • I have the same problem :). I found some people on wirlpool that have the AOC and they are happy with it.

    • I commented in that thread as well :)

tossed a coin and went with the AOC, $364 delivered with ebay's 20% off + whatever cashreward

    3 still available, ends tonight @ 23:59

    • Tell me how you like it :)

      • I'll be happy to, if I ever get it… it's now in the hands of fastway couriers - feel free to google them…

        • Did you get the monitor? How do you like it?

        • @misu p: I take it you didn't google fastway couriers, otherwise you wouldn't ask. they're currently returning it to the seller, who will then send it again by aus post -_-

        • @RiseAndRuin: damn, sorry mate, I did google them but I think with any courier you just see the problems with the deliveries, I assumed most deliveries go through all right

        • @misu p: not with that courier. I never had a problem with TNT and DHL though, they're absolutely brilliant IMHO. Auspost is not bad but definitely not as efficient/fast, never lost any item with them (yet).
I think it'll take another 1-2 weeks to get the monitor, however there are a few threads on whirlpool being updated if you're looking for opinions, they seem mostly positive.

      • A month late, but I copped the AOC and its brilliant. Upgraded from a 27in FHD Acer screen to the AOC. It's night and day. It's ruined pretty much every other monitor for me. Great display. If you have a Mac, the display control software doesnt work for it, so you have to use the buttons to change monitor settings (such as moving in and out of gamemode).

        • Thank you, I am probably going to buy it too.

    • How is it going mate?
Just curious, Have you got the monitor? How is it doing?

      • never got the AOC, so decided to go with the Philips 2k 32", which is great btw

        • What's the model number and any good deals around?

        • @RiseAndRuin:
Do you find the screen on the BDM3270QP2 too glossy or reflective? … compared to say the Samsung LS32D85KTSN/XY (same specs but matte).

        • @maverick: no idea about the Samsung, the Philips is glossy but super bright so I don't really notice, but you'd have to see it in person as that is very subjective.

        • How's the backlight bleed on the Philips? I just purchased an Acer 2k 32" and it has terrible bleeding that I can't stand. I came from a super glossy TV screen, so a matte finish + backlight bleed is pretty jarring haha.

RX460 works for 4k Video, almost flawlessly anyway.

The RX 560 will replace the RX460, so it's currently on clearance at MSY for $159.

  • Found this thread on google - just want to add that the ViewSonic 2k at 32" is gorgeous. Just installed one yesterday via displayport and it natively displays the 2k resolution without doing anything. Really nice screen, no downsides except maybe that the stand doesn't have any height adjustment.

  • Guys, Could you please let me know if there is a better deal around on a 2K monitor?!

    Cheers,
    Sowny

$334 after using the PREZZY code

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/32-AOC-Q3279VWF8-WQHD-LED-Gaming…

It's normally $380 dollars from other competing shops.

      • Thanks mate! 32" seems to be quite big for me as I do mostly office related work than gaming. Any QHD monitors on 24" - 27" in a good deal around?

Same price as the one above. $334. BenQ's "BL" series are business monitors, they put extra effort into designing the stand. You can tilt, rotate and pivot the monitor into various orientations (e.g portrait mode)

          @Sowny:

2560x1080 means you get an aspect ratio 21:9

good for gamers who want cinematic gameplay, but for officework, I usually have two monitors, each 1080p. One monitor shows Ozbargain and another I run Slack for moderator discussions or look at other documents / sites.

something to think about: your work-style and how you prefer to divide your workspace, then you should buy your monitors based on how you'd like your things to be arranged (as well as desk space. dual monitors also mean a lot of extra cables to work with, having one big monitor means you can reduce cable clutter)

        • @scrimshaw: Well said! I'm comfortable having a a two 24" monitor at office as you mentioned. However, when it comes to home, during WFH days, I prefer having a single 27" QHD monitor!

        • @scrimshaw: Also, are you saying the 32-AOC-Q3279VWF monitor would suit for work as well for gaming (I have an XBOX One S)?

        • Please contact Microsoft Tech support and ask if Xbox One S support downscaling to 2k resolution. I don't think it does and your game may just play at 1080p, but I'm not that knowledgeable on the xbox console

          https://support.xbox.com/en-AU/xbox-one/console/tv-resolutio…

You will need to buy the Xbone One X to have that feature.

          https://www.windowscentral.com/xbox-one-x-outputs-1440p-reso…

        • @scrimshaw: I see. How about 4K monitors then? Can we use both for work and game as well?

  • I'm going to be that negative person now to rain on this mostly positive parade…. I owned 2 of the AOC Q3279VWF8 by which I don't mean I purchased 2. I mean I had one and I shipped it back because it was the single worst monitor I have ever had the displeasure of using. Turned out the Display Port was screwed on the first one so they sent me another one. That one I still couldn't take the blurring in games especially how they would often smear yellow due to overdrive (where the pixels are driven hard to swap faster and sort of go too far and have to go back to the right colour)or other odd colours. When playing the Witcher 3 I was first impressed and then horrified when I went to turn around in game the result was a juddering horrible mess even if things did look good as long as Geralt stayed really really still. Even reducing the game to 1080p didn't fix the issue but not hugely surprising really. 1080p and 1440p don't scale well to each other so the monitor would be struggling to do it.

I ended up getting the HP Omen 32 which appears to be a hard monitor to get in Australia.

Some of my issues was probably my aged GTX 770 struggling at 1440p but it wasn't just gaming which was horrible. Scrolling in websites was terrible and when I moved things onto one of my other 2 monitors which are old TN panels things just looked so much smoother even though they have a slower response time. I refuse to believe my 770 wasn't up to rendering forum pages.

    TLDR;
The AOC monitor is cheap for a reason and while pretty can ghost pretty bad
Be warned that 1440p gaming is much harder than 1080p gaming so make sure your computer is up for it.
