Going to Japan in a week and was wondering if anyone knows if I can download a map of Japan on my satnav so I can take it with me. If not, is there another option for navigating when driving? (please don't suggest getting my wife or kids to help me!!)

Ahh not sure about that, sorry. I just assumed you would have pocket wifi or a data sim to use while there.
For the most part I'll be connected to the internet, just a few days when driving i won't be.

as you're hiring a car then most car rentals have GPS available that are multilingual.

that's cool. I'd also suggest a data only sim, android phone, car usb charger as well. I had a S3 when I drove around europe it was very good (except when driving through the CBDs and the buildings would block signals)
You could use Google maps on your phone.
