Looking for a salad for lunch in Brisbane CDB and I find myself often paying $13-$25 for a chicken salad. Why is salad so expensive?

    Tossing salad requires some skill

    I blame Chicken Run.

It's expensive because because the health conscious treat their bodies like a temple and pay accordingly. Kale used to be cheap. Special K used to be a standard cereal comparable with cornflakes until they started spruikng it with folate wellness and upped the price.

agree. look at sumosalad prices. disgusting.
also vegetable dishes in the restaurant, some are more expensive than meat dishes

    • Sum Salad is fairly price in my opinion, there's not much of a premium over normal takeaway food.

Go to Coles and a bag of salad

a bag of salad isnt that cheap either. $3 for a bag of air

  • +2

Because you're in the CBD and its normally rich people there

a salad takes longer to make than a burger so you're paying the labour costs.

    • +1

      are you sure about that?

was a chef for 17 years and can smash a salad together in around a minute.

      • So why is salad so expensive then?

        • because it's healthy and good for you

p.s i didnt neg vote you, saw that you had neg vote and gave you positive one :-)

        • @myusername:

Thanks. I was just taking the piss.
I know how things work in a kitchen. I am sure salad is not the only thing you do. A whole day's work of prep

Go to a Vietnamese place and get a chicken salad for about $6

Make it yourself everyday and you will probably figure out why?

    simple answer to this is………

because it's actually healthy and good for you.

Because you are in Brisbane CDB, try Brisbane CBD instead.

This was actually my thesis subject at Uni. It all originates from the great salad war of 72BC where Ceaser overthrew the Greek leader General Balasamicos. It was bloody but it still impacts us today.

Fun fact: Caesar salad was named after an Italian immigrant living in Mexico/United States in the 1920s, not Julius Caesar.

      • Yep, it's like legionaires' disease…suprisingly not very old nor Roman :p

Because of supply and demand. Just look at the crowds at McDonalds during lunchtime. The volume they get enables them to sell their stuff cheaper. Compare that to the crowds at salad places. Also salads has to be quite fresh to be nice, ie. they have a shorter shelf life compared to, say, processed meat.

Just make your own salad at home, and bring it to work. It is not even cooking, more like assembling.

    They can't freeze/reheat salad

  • +2

Why is anything expensive? Because you and others are willing to pay that price.

Imagine the cost of buying lunch for goats and sheep.

  • Its the cost of pretending its clean and free from pesticides by washing it, and then mixing it up.

  • I don't have a clue why salads cost so much but FWIW Costco have pre mixed salad greens for $10/kilo. Might be an option for you?

The hipster tax on Avocado may address some of the problems of housing affordability.
Certainly meets principles of fairness, security and opportunity.

  • Wait till another salmonella outbreak then see them give it out for free.

  • Salad and vegetables are expensive because restaurants can't keep them as long as they keep meat if unsold. Thats the reason.

Make it yourself & take with you. For years I have taken an avocado, made at home salad, small can of tuna, salmon or chicken ( bought from supermarket, about 99c ) & some light Italian dressing to put on. Throw it together at lunchtime & enjoy for a very cheap, healthy lunch.
Also take my home made muffins for morning coffee - not as healthy, but yummy.

Perishable foods vs frozen foods. It can only be made fresh daily. Junk made is processed with preservatives and can last days to weeks frozen. The wasted food needs to be built into the price.

Go to subway for cheap salad. Ask for the salad, basically it's the sub with no bread.

    • +1

or maybe the sub with no bread, hold the salad…

  • Overheads. Think of how much they are paying rental and salaries, and you will wonder how any food business makes a profit!

  • Making a salad at home for lunch or dinner is great.
