Good podcasts

Hey everyone,

Let us know which podcasts you're listening too.

They may be entertaining or offering great advice.

Ozbargainers are usually after good life or financial advice to "get ahead in life".

I use Pocket Casts on my phone, podcasts played at 1.5x speed, and the app has a setting to skip intros and quiet breaks in the podcasts which are not of any value.

Here goes mine:

I started to listen to podcasts again recently, so far the list is:

Serial - The first season was good, but I didn't enjoy the second as much.
    S-Town
    My Dad Wrote a Porno
    Revisionist History
    The Hilarious World of Depression
No Such Thing as a Fish

I might add a few of yours to my list.

I really haven't listened to many podcasts, but can wholly vouch for serial and S-Town as fantastic bits of long-form storytelling. Both spinoffs of This American Life. And Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History presents similar but different; each episode is more like a chapter in one of his books. A writer who is fantastic at drawing seemingly disparate threads together into an intriguing story

  • "Roderick on the Line" will change your life.

  • To add to @Hansi list:

    Entertainment:

The Moth Radio Hour - People tell stories in "story slams"
Here's The Thing - Interviews by Alec Baldwin

    Financial
How I built This - another NPR show.

@manshrew - Serial S3 is out and has good reviews.

I don't think Serial S3 is out yet?

There is a new podcast by the Serial creators & NPR called 'S-town', is that what you're thinking of?

It's not bad, only 7 ~50min episodes. Better than Serial S2, but not as good as the original.

      • Yes, S-town. My bad.

  • Phoebe's Fall.

    606

Flintoff, Savage and the Ping Pong Guy.

    Serial

    In The Dark

  • Funny RPG Podcasts:

One Shot - professional improvisors playing different role playing games each month
Campaign - long form story telling of a disfunctional crew in the Star Wars universe
The Adventure Zone - a family playing dungeons & dragons together which is good fun

  • The Joe Rogan Experience
    Criminal
Benjamins Walker's The Theory of Everything
    Common Sense with Dan Carlin
    Radiolab
    This American Life
    The New Yorker Radio Hour
    The TED Radio Hour

    • Actually, Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" Podcast was amazing too, I have listened to the episodes several times.

    • Crimetown

    Financial

    • The Dave Ramsey Show
    • Waking Up - Sam Harris

    • Joe Rogan Podcast

    • Big Think

  • Do you really listen to all of that list?

    • I listen to stuff while I do other stuff. Phone + BT speaker such as Logitech X50.

    • Hi fruit,

Those are the English speaking podcasts I listen to the most.

I do not listen to every podcast of every channel, but decide what is interested based on the description of the podcast when it comes out.

Some of the news podcasts I listen to daily, as well as some foreign podcasts, which I think are not of interest to anyone here though.

I work on a computer all day, doing analysing / data science stuff, so I listen to many of my podcasts at work ( I would say 2 - 3 hours a day ).

  • I use Pocket Casts

It doesn't auto skip ads though right?

    • Hi Diji1, unfortunately it doesn't.

You can set when a Podcast should begin ( x MM:SS after the start of the podcasts ) to avoid the intros.

The other function I meant was "Trim Silence". Whenever there is no sound / nothing being said in a podcast, that part will automatically be cut out.

The design of the app is good, a user profile to save your settings and the ability to customise a lot of things made me stick with this one after trying a few different apps.

    • It doesn't auto skip ads though right?

      Any app that does this?

And any other good podcast apps for iphone?

good thread idea, i'll have to look into some of these. I left off that are already in the OP

    • Stacking Benjamins - an easy listening light hearted finance show
    • Afford Anything - probably my second favorite show after Tim Ferris, life and money philosophies, good interviews
    • Money for the rest of us - delves into finance topics
    • Invested - the rule #1 podcast - value investing, drags on but they eventually get to some good lessons
    • Death Sex & Money
    • The Art of Charm - interviews some interesting characters
    • Bulletproof Radio - goes deep into body science
    • Stuff You Should Know - they pick a topic an interesting topic and go into it, somewhat like a good wikipedia summary. Eg, the 10,000 year clock was pretty fascinating
    • Tell Me Something I Should Know - spinoff from the freakonomics author, a light hearted game show
    • Happier With Gretchin Rubin - can have some good life tips on living a better/happier life
    • Hardcore History - how wars in the past played out, really interesting, something I wouldn't have the time to learn about otherwise
    • Thanks, I added some and will see if I like them.

I actually already listen to the bottom 4 from time to time, except for Hardcore History.

That podcast from Dan Carlin is just amazing and I've had to listen to the World War series several times.

  • @idjces I read a blog called Afford Anything - it is very good. I wonder if it is the same person?

    • Yes, I believe so
