Car insurance quote: AU license experience based on overseas license

Hi

I'm going to buy a second hand car and looking for insurance quote for cheap comprehensive after reading experiences here for 3rd party only. I was bit confused with age of license field in the quote. The age of the car is old and looking for cheap comprehensive mainly meant for disaster purpose only and avoiding headaches from no fault instances.

I got my NSW driving license as red P in 2015 and relocated to QLD in couple of months and was issued with Green P based on my age and with overseas license after verification they issued full license in 4 months later.

When i was looking for quote I got mixed responses. Coles rep said in on-line chat they will consider only from date of first issue in Australia so I wont get full discount even without any previous history. But my QLD Full DL is based on verification of my overseas license(>10+). Contrary to coles, RACQ said they do consider and accordingly quote was provided.

I would like to know any other insurance companies similar to racq considering my age of driving experience and can check for better quote and decide based on pds. Anybody has similar experiences. Should I input >8+ driving experience with each company for quote, will it nullify later based on company rules when i proceed with policy. Is calling each insurance companies to check what is their rules is the only way? . Anybody else in similar situation before.

Appreciate your inputs.

  • Check in the company PDS documents that should be online for you to see, if they do not specify then yes the only way to confirm is to speak with a rep from the company. And make sure that they give you written (email) notification that your previous driving history counts.

If you go ahead and get online quotes with your previous driving history and then have a crash and they find out they might not cover you.

  • Bingle does.

  • The question didn't say "when did you first get an Australian licence?" or "how many years have you had an Australian licence?"

I'd just answer the question as it stands.

If your overseas experience is good enough for the state licensing authority, it should be good enough for the insurance company.

  • I was under the same impression with state licensing authority. But when coles rep said they won't consider and only from the first date of issue with DL i was confused. I checked the coles pds and dont see any mention in this case.

So I haven't checked all but RACQ, Bingle does is good. I have seen bingle cheapest quote i received compared to racq at the moment.
