  • I've never been but by all reports this is a zoo, not a sanctuary.

    • Whose reports? It's been known as Healesville Sanctuary for yonks, and before that it was the Sir Colin MacKenzie Sanctuary. As Zoos Victoria currently operates the place, you may well be correct. As I understand it, the main difference is how the animals are acquired. Does Healesville Sanctuary breed animals, or buy from or sell to other zoos? I don't know.

A sanctuary is a safe space. Zoos are exhibitions. Sanctuaries hold the residents in highest regard, exhibitions the visitors and their dollars. The nature of this deal is enough to indicate which one we're talking about here.

        • I didn't neg you, but don't sanctuaries need to charge admission so that they have the funds to care for the creatures in their care? Not too many would have a wealthy benefactor, I would think.

        • @strangeloops66:

I've been to a few sanctuaries during their fund raisers. They always gave clear instructions on keeping distance from the residents, provided detailed biographies, and generally made me know it was a limited privilege to be able to see inside. Kids are often not allowed or required to be kept under tight control. Those who support sanctuaries for what they're actually intended would accept those terms fully and be happy to pay more. It's a world apart from general admission to anyone with money.

Kids are free on weekends. Can I buy an adult ticket and get another adult ticket free?

      • Valid on adult, child, senior, concession and student tickets.
    • RACV is just highlight that you can use the offer with different priced tickets, you just pay the more expensive one.

      • Hey Melbourne Guy,

Just wondering if you know they check your ID when redeeming this offer? We are going to use my mum's membership card.

        • Don't know for sure (haven't gone there and tried) but I doubt they care who's membership card it is.

        • @melbourne guy: just back from Healesville, they practically glance over the card, no scrutiny done.

On a related note, the zoo is a hollow reflection of its past. Wasn't very impressed today, a lot less exhibits than before.

        • @hashtagbargain:
I went today for the first time ever. There were some areas that were great, like the new koala area, but other areas looked tired and in need of a decent reno. I also got the impression sometimes that animal dispays were pinched for periods of time for the exclusive use of people that have paid for those extra paid experiences.
