Working on an App That Can Compare Prices of Your Shopping List between Coles & Woolworths Allowing You to Save!

Hi all,

I've been strolling on OzBargain for years now and have been lucky to score some solid deals as part of the wonderful community we've got here.

A friend and I are currently developing an App that will allow you to create a shopping list and compare the prices of your list between the two major supermarket chains. In our research we've found that there can in excess of a $10 price variation on a $100 basket between them!

We are looking for people who would be interested in giving our app a test run (likely to be early to mid June) before we go full swing with the wider market.

Also, happy to take feedback and suggestions from the fellow OzB community as I'd like for it to be beneficial to the entire community.

If your interested in signing up, head to www.grocerygetter.com.au

Cheers all!

Prices change all the time, with all this half price stuff. Are you using some algorithm or just using man hours to compare?.

    • We will be using an algorithm.

Prices change all the time, with all this half price stuff.

      Once a week actually. Wednesday.

  • Build Android only at first and you'll own that space

But no one will buy the app. iOS users pull out the wallets.

    We have Savas.

I usually just google to see the price
Eg Dove men's deodorant Coles, dove men's deodorant Woolworths

  • Sounds like an excellent idea.
    Can't wait :)

If I only want a few products, Price Hipster (with filters) works really well

      I love Price Hipster

  • some people shop with a fixed number of items in their baskets each time or have an eye out for particular items.

it would be a good idea to be able to have shopping lists in the app that then automatically load the price difference for that list, rather than searching individual items.

I would in vision 3 lists.
    - the usual shopping list that has items I would purchase each week. like eggs, milk, bread, fruit and veg, meat.
    - the to look out for list that I may buy once in a while. things like toilet paper or tissues.. you may not buy every week but are interested in seeing the price differences to make an informed decision whether to buy or not.
    - the specific list, for one off purchases for a particular reason like an event.. putting all your kids party groceries into a list that you would purchase one off.

  • One problem you might have that I've found with price hipster (which I assume is because of how the companies load their information on to their website) is that minor spelling differences will mean that products aren't directly comparable. So if you have a list with 4 pack V 275ml, there may be some manual input required (either on your end or asking the user to confirm) to make sure that you get a direct comparison.
    EG
Coles: V Original Green Energy Drink 275mL Cans
    Woolworths: V Guarana Energy Drink 4pk 275ml

    • Can confirm, this is a pain in the butt. It's probably the most requested feature for pricehipster.com but it's not an easy problem to solve.

    • if you type "V G Energy Drink 275ml" you will get comparison results…

This is true, and it works well for most cases, but I think what ilikeradiohead means is having the system know when two products are the same. This has implications for price alerting, for example.

        • but price alerts are set up per item per store so if you find the item in Coles and then Woolworths and set up the alert for each, it works. I have no issues doing it this way unless there is a feature I am not aware that does not require price alerts to be manually set up per item per store and can be done at product level?

        • Bit of a side note, when i get emails from PH (daily for example) the images are all different sizes and make it hard to read the email on phones - any chance you can add default image size tags in the email html??

        • @singingwolf: That feature you speak of does not exist, but it is what I was alluding to. :-)

        • @jazoom: OK sweet - same page :-)

        • @singingwolf: The thing is, email sucks. Since I don't have control over the images' aspect ratios and most email clients are in the HTML/CSS dark ages, there isn't a whole lot I can do. Would you mind linking to a screenshot in a PM (I don't want to hijack grocerygetter's thread). Maybe something in particular is off on your client.

        • @jazoom: will do - cheers

@jazoom: I think I may have the solution to the spelling differences. It's a bit manual but will deliver results in the long run.

        • @grocerygetter: That's cool. I'd love to hear about it. Manual doesn't seem to work so well with Price Hipster (4 million products and counting) but if you're focusing on just Coles and Woolworths that is only 40000-ish products so it might work well for you.

Hey this looks great. Best of luck!

How are you working the cross platform aspect? PhoneGap? React Native?

    • Thanks jazoom,

We are still working on the pro's and cons of each.
Found out about PriceHipster from a friend last week and I have to say I was very impressed with the quick responsiveness of the website & search results.

      • Thanks mate! I've kept performance at the front of my mind throughout the entire life of the project so I'm always happy to hear people appreciate it.

  • We just launched v2.0 of the App over the weekend.

Would love to hear feedback from the OzBargain community.

    • Looks good. I really love the modern swoosh green background on your website.

FYI: "Busy moms like Mariana C. love GroceryGetter:"

In Australia it's usually spelled "mums".
