Help please! How to use NB14WN modem router as just a router?!

Hi guys
I just got nbn and have the arris cable modem. I want to connect but my new AC router hasn't arrived yet.

My current nb14wn netcomm modem only has LAN ports.
I can't find a way to configure one as a wan port so that I can use it as a router connected to my cable modem?

Any thoughts would be superb! Please and thank you :)

  • just plug it into the first one and it should be fine. You may need to go into the config and disable the DHCP server if the modem already has one.

  • Really? Does it auto detect that it's a router only not a modem anymore?

    • it wont auto-detect. You will need to config the wan settings on the device to do it. by default, it should expect to get Internet connectivity from the port that you connect the phone line and you want to change that to a particular lan port.

      • Ah thanks.
My problem is I can't find out what the wording is for the setting I need to change.
Or where in the world I'd find that setting!

        • Google search for the manual I assume you don't have………..and even if you do, an online PDF would be searchable by terms/words.

        • @havebeerbelywillsumo:

Unfortunately I have the manual in PDF and just don't see anywhere that mentions it. Unless it's bridge mode or something like that. Gah I'm pretty tech savvy but networking stuff baffles me.

        • @Hoju:
Sounds like me LOL………..login to modem menu & see if there is a WAN entry in the menu (may be hidden under advanced (or similar term??) Solely going on yk's reply (that I hope I am reading right) just plug it into the LAN port that is designated for the phone if you can…..on one of mine it was noted as such on the modem, on another it was a different colour to the other multiple lan ports.

Added on edit & I stress a VERY quick look as I'm tied up with something, advance apologies if they aren't the answer

        • @havebeerbelywillsumo:

Thanks for the tips and links. Tried it all but no luck.
I read somewhere on a whirlpool guide that cable modems can't do all this stuff.
Something about not doing DHCP or something.
Dammit, so frustrating. I can build a computer and do most software stuff but networking is straight over my head.

        • @Hoju: Make sure your device has routing capability, not just a modem.

For example, my modem router has 4 lan ports and 1 port for the phone cable. That 1 port for the phone cable should be left empty. Run a cable from your NBN router to one of the lan ports, taking note of the port number. Then log onto your router and configure your WAN settings. I think some devices call it external WAN. This essentially should say something like "my connection is coming from the Lan port, not from the modem connection."

You may need additional settings, depending on your ISP/service. Your WIFi settings should remain the same.

        • @yk300:

Thanks for the advice. I honestly can't find anything in the manual or going through all the settings that might allow me to do an external WAN type setup.

I've given up and thankfully it looks like the router will arrive a week earlier than expected. And bonus, my ISP exetel has refunded the charges for the week I've been unable to use the internet!

  • Hey mate, maybe try this.

Edit: looks like you do use the ADSL port, but as you say it might not work because of the DHCP relay.
