Opinions on new vs old job

I accepted a job offer but not entirely sure if I made the right decision, thus just asking for some opinions. Basically these are the differences between my new job and old job:

Old job:

  • 52k base rate, can go to 65-70k with penalties and some OT
  • 17 days of work per month (lots of 10 hrs shifts)
  • Have to work a range of shifts
  • 20-25 mins drive from home
  • Established good relationship/friendship with my colleagues, especially my boss
  • 2nd in charge
  • Highly regarded and respected in workplace
  • Easy and manageable tasks

New job:

  • 90k salary, management position, can go to 95-100k if I engage in OT, Public Holiday work.
  • 40-50 minutes drive from home
  • New team of 8-9 staff who are potentially not as nice as my old team
  • More difficult tasks
  • More demanding boss who works offsite but conducts regular visits.
  • 19 days of work per month

I guess I'm getting paid more to do more, but do you think I have made the right choice?

Time for you to be a big boy and make the decision yourself.

You obviously looked for another job for a reason. Every employer wants their pound of flesh so more you get paid the more they expect for their money

    • I have been doing my boss's role when he goes away, but this time it's an entirely different environment which causes me to hesitate.
But like you said it's time to step out of my shell and be a big boy. Thank you!

  • I dont see what the problem is here

Salary is usually commensurate to higher levels of stress and more requirements from management

Second in charge and you were on $52k/year? You definitely made the right choice.

    • Base rate wise I'm actually earning the least out of the whole team, having only started less than 2 years ago.

    why would you say no?
sorry but i think the aussie population is getting dumber and dumber.

    • I have a personal attachment to my old job and my team which makes the decision hard, and the old job's like cruising.

      • i guess 40k means nothing to you.

  • It's tough starting a new job, especially one with more responsibility.

Perhaps now that you have obtained the new job opportunity it is now time to look inward at the things that you need to work on.

Are your work habits up to scratch? How are your communication skills? Do you understand what leadership is?

You have hit a level where the priority at work is to be good at your job more so than to make new friends. If you work hard on your values and let people know that you are there to stay no matter what they throw at you eventually they have no choice but to respect you.

Man up (or woman up) as the skills you will learn in this job will last a lifetime.

  • I think every job is what you make of it. It'll take time to settle in and learn a bit more about the job and your team. You're getting paid more - so expect more responsibility and more chaos which will in turn, require more from you. Try to stay positive, learn what you can, get off ozbargain and get back to work! Seriously though - enjoy the new job, stay in touch with your previous colleagues, you may go back there in the future with more experience and earn a better pay cheque.

But you've already accepted, so what's the point of this post? Also, most of the differences aren't perceived at all.

Good Luck at the new job!
