Samsung Gear S3 - Opinions? Worth It?

Hey all,

Just wanted some opinons on the Gear S3 smartwatch. For those who have it, do you recommend it? If no, what do you recommend in its stead?

I'm mainly just looking for a watch in general as I have yet to own any watch for myself. I can snag this watch for $359 with the Westpac promotion. Think I should wait for a new gear release or spend my money on another non-smart watch?

I Should mention that I plan on using it for casual and formal use. I think they look rather nice with a leather band.

My other concern is whether this watch is too big for me or not. It's a rather large watch as it is 42mm. Here's a photo of me wearing it http://tinypic.com/r/2iqfwom/9.

Thanks in advance!

    • Sales figures would say otherwise
Saying that i agree the Watch is nice :P

  • +1

I love mine (it's a S3 Classic). I mainly use it for casual health stuff (like how many steps I've walked and sleeping pattern), Samsung Pay, notifications and basic interactions and as a watch. Battery life is alright. That said, if you buy it to use apps, Tizen app market is lacking in that department.

In terms of whether next one will be worth it? I am getting the feeling that Samsung will introduce Bixby on Gear S4. Whether they will bring that to Gear S3, I have no clue, they may or may not. They haven't put a fast wireless charging into smartwatches yet. I am not sure how much they will improve other than that.

Other smartwatches can be better for you. Android Wear has better app support and has Google Now, which probably would be better than what's on Gear S3. Watches from proper fitness brand would be better for fitness tracking.

If you are buying it more for the looks, I reckon it'd be better to go for normal watches. Cheaper, less maintanence, and they would probably look better (as they will be thinner than smartwatches). I kinda went for S3 for those features I've mentioned above.

    • Thanks for the input! It mainly is for the looks if I'm being honest but I thought to myself 'Well hey, why not get a watch which includes a tonne of additional features if I'm going to be spending that much anyway'. I'm not too interested in the health apps tbh. But just the thought of having the option available is nice.

      • Unless you have a mechanical watch (which would be more expensive than this), normal watches are way better at telling times, requires less maintanence and looks nicer (and lighter) in general. Looks are more about how thin they can be (smartwatches pertrude out so it can look tacky), since liking a design is more of personal taste. The additional features have to compensate for that. Another additional feature I forgot to mention is custom watchfaces. You can even go into those ones that look like a real watch, XDA has info those.

Battery life is probably going to be one of the noticible negative thing compared to real watch (unless you go into mechanical), not just how short is comparatively but relatively unreliable it is. Battery life is an estimate and so longer the battery life is, less you have to worry about that. Display being off when you don't use it (AOD is darker and reduces battery life by half) is another one.

It's not a watch that's as good as others that have additional features, I personally treat it more like an electronic device that can act like a watch. That's my opinion.

    • getting the feeling that Samsung will introduce Bixby on Gear S4

Really? Do you think they'll have made it work by that stage or will they just keep throwing shit to see what sticks?

  • The Huawei watch looks good

  • They appear to be devices for the neurotic in all honesty. For example we have someone in this thread explaining how they monitor the number of steps they take and the amount of sleep they're getting even though the measurements they're using are wildly innaccurate and therefore meaningless.

    • Thanks.

There are two ways that a data can be "accurate". Trueness is when it is close to the true value (systematic error would reduce this), precision is when the data you get are close to one another (random error would reduce this).

I find the data relatively precise. This is because my life pattern is usually relatively consistent. Therefore it has a meaning. I can set one point as a reference and compare those values to that. For example, have I had less steps yesterday? I am obviously not going to run a scientific experiment with it. That said, I don't need to concern myself with getting the measurements. It's an easy way to track my life style.

    • neuroticism isn't an actual scientifically accepted phenomenon

      • Neuroticism is one of the big five personality trait. It's one of the first thing you learn when you start learning personality psychology.

  • I have the original samsung gear live and the moto 360 sport… i love both of them. The moto being a lot newer lasts 2 days for me between charges, also handy wedge i don't want to take my phone bike riding and want to listen to music.

Think the thing i like best is that when you are wearing the watches it mutes your phone, great for when I'm at work.

Not sure what Tizen is like as I've not used anything other than android wear watches. Do love the latest version of android wear watches.
