School Photos

It's school photos time for our kids.

Here are the prices for the packs listed here - http://www.msp.com.au/Products/primary-school

Basic Pack - $37
Essential Pack - $39
Value Pack - $41
Classic Pack - $44
Premium Pack - $49

To be honest, all I want is a high quality digital photo that I can print myself but school photographers don't offer that to obviously increase their revenue.

Any of you OzBargainers refuse to order school photos at these prices?

For me, I'm thinking that I might DIY and take decent individual photos myself with my Canon 600D. For the class photo, it will be in the end of year book anyway.

this is one of the most lucrative businesses in australia.

    • Not passport photos?

Although I only get the basic pack for both of my kids (large portrait, a few tiny ones and a class photo) it is something I truly treasure as I still have all of mine as a child/teen and love to reminisce.

Yeah - school photos are the biggest scam going.
Just rock up to school on photo day and take your own.
    Enjoy!

duck me dead, $37K if all the kids (avg 1000 per school) buy the basic pack, i'm becoming a photographer and doing it for $1 cheaper per kid.

From a teachers perspective, it's probably something you shouldn't completely skimp on. Perhaps just the class photo and large portrait would suffice. It's not nice being the one or two kids in the class who doesn't get a photo (primary school, high schoolers probably have less of a care factor). I know sometimes it's the cost for parents, however I often find it's the most neglected kids who don't end up getting one. I often run off a class photo on the printer for them to keep and it means a lot to them.

  • I get both sides.

As a high school kid you want to have a memory but it's $30 for a picture which you could take at the mirror. Depends on the person

Eh, ~$40 in the scheme of things with kids is pretty negligible in a way.

    Those with kids will understand.

It's once a year, cop it on the chin and hope your kid doesn't pull a stupid face lol

    • Dont you love it forking out the money to realise after that face :/

Also doesn't just end there you have sports photos as well :)

      • +1

Yeah :/ it's an annoying gamble lol

  • it's not worth embarrassing your little loved one with you there, they will remember that forever and so will their friends. ring up the photographer and try get a discount or abuse them for extorting you.

MSP really annoy me. I want a single photo and a class photo, I don't want all the other crap!

  • You could have posted this on the deals forum.

    • No decent deals here!

      • No bargains as well…

  • some of the packs do include a file for printing >44$
If it's all head shots photos you paying for. then i suppose you could try to do some studio photography as home.
But if its a class photos, then it really up to you if your willing to pay for it. These photos would probably get deleted (by the photographer)after a few years.

    • It's not about being willing to pay for it, it's about not wanting your children to hate you for not giving them their school photos. There's no choice in the matter, you just have to go along with it.

  • Just pay, but just make sure you get the class photo and atleast one single photo. But yeah, buy every year for $40. Just what you have to do when you are a parent. Goodness, I know some adults who are still bitter because they missed school photos one year, or their parents wouldn't buy school photos. Just buy then so it is never an issue.
