Suggestion on Which People Mover to Buy

Hi this is my first post in Ozbargain.

I am currently looking to buy a new/demo people mover and according to my research I have shortlisted the below options

Honda Odyssey VTI-L
Kia Carnival SLi - 2.2 Diesel
Kia Carnival SLi - 3.3 petrol
Hyundai IMAX

My budget is around $45-50 K, I have two young kids (aged 3 and 1). The car would be used to ferry 4 adults (either my in-laws or my parents along with us) and 2 kids.

I have found the below quotes in the manufacturer websites for these models, prices are based in NSW.

Honda Odyssey VTI-L : $50K RRP driveaway (I can find demos for $44k)
Carnival SLi 2.2L Diesel Automatic Drive Away $57K driveaway RRP (I can find demos for $48k)
Carnival SLi 3.3L Petrol Automatic Drive Away $54K drive away RRP (I can find demos for $44k)
IMAX - 2.4 45,994.62 RRP driveaway (not done research on this one since this car looks are not great and is more like a van)

I would need your suggestions on which model should I go for and what would be the best drive away price that I should target to negotiate (the lesser the best).

Right now I am unable to decide between Honda Odyssey and Carnival 2.2 diesel (7 years warranty and capped price service for 7 years). I think the petrol version will be very hungry as I would be mostly doing city driving.

The car would be used for shopping and weekends only. I don't drive to work neither does my Mrs. I am planning to have the vehicle for at least next 7-10 years and I currently do 8,000 KM an year.

So would need your thoughts on which one should I go for.

Please don't suggest LDV G10, Stavic . Also I am not sure if a seven seater SUV will be comfortable hence I am not considering them since I will have at least 1 adult sitting in the last row.

  • Recent car test on these by Paul Gover placed the Kia at the top of the list, I have a 2017 Kia Sportage and it is great, plus the 7 year warranty …somthing to consider!.

    • Thanks , but do you know if the diesel engine will be costly to maintain compared to the petrol version

    • No you don't, you have a 2016 model…

Mate I have the 2015 Kia Carnival diesel (current model) and we absolutely love it.I'd highly recommend it.

    • good to have feedback from an existing owner. do you have the S/Si/SLI or platinum one? any issues / negatives about the car ?

      • SLI. The car is just terrific. Have had it for nearly two year and 30,000ks. Hasn't missed a beat. The extra for the Platinum just wasn't worth it for us. It is a big car, but if you want that extra room inside that's what you get.I haven't noticed the floating that ds98928392839 mentions below.

        • Yes even I think it's not worth to pay more for the platinum.i did test drive and it was quite comfortable to drive

    • would the third row seating be comfortable for an adult ? i dont think so , as per the feedback from my one of friend who has a kluger grande we can accommodate kids in third row but not good for adults.

        • my in laws are 6 ft and 5.10 and they are bit heavy as well :-)

        • how tall are you by the way?

      • It's not a proper 7 seater. 5"10 wouldn't fit.

if you are doing mostly city driving, and thinking of a diesel, you should google 'DPF regeneration' and make sure you can give the car a good burst weekly at highway speeds for 1/2 hour.

    • yes we would be using it on the weekends to travel in highways so i am not worried about this. thanks for the info though.

      • you do know that by buying a people mover, you are resigning yourself to a life of DULLNESS !!

        ;)

        • yes i aware of that but i don't have much of a choice mate. Even i would prefer something other than a people mover but really we dont seem to have any.

  • I'd be going the Honda. I hired the carnival and it was such a terrible drive - so huge and floats all over the road.

  • Make sure you test drive all of em

    • yes thats for sure

      • Driving experiences is important!

do not listen to anything john cadogan says

    • +4

Yes he talks a lot of shit

    • I would sooner listen to him when reviewing cars because he isn't taking bribes from car makers to write nice comments and shit talker he may be and abrasive as he is, he generally just calls it like it is and that rubs fanboys the wrong way…

  • Maybe have a look at the Prius V. 7 seats (back two fold flat) hybrid, drives nicely. We quite like ours.

    • Will certainly look at this . How is the third row seating. Can it accommodate a 6ft adult ?

      • Haven't tried with someone that tall yet, I'd lean toward probably not, but more than enough room in the middle row of seats for tall people.

        • Ok thanks for the suggestion. In my scenario one of the adults would be in the last row hence I think Prius will not be a viable option

  • Would you consider a 2nd hand one, you could save heaps of cash, KIAs tend to depreciate heaps. Are you considering 7 seat SUVs like the Volvo XC90 and the AUDI Q7?

    • Sorry I am not a big fan of European cars and with second cars in these brands I guess I will get the ones which around 4 to 5 years old and out of warranty . If any maintenance comes up then it will hits us monthly budgets pretty hard

  • We have a 2016 carnival SLi diesel, it's a great car, we are very happy with our purchase and have had 8 people in the car without issue (some being kids in car seats). We purchased our mid last year for $51k drive away with floor mats and a full tank (then received free paint and leather protection due to a delay in delivery). Ours is white so didn't have to pay extra for paint.

    • Thanks for the feed back it always helps when we get feedback from existing customers

Kia Carnival, note some of the poor reviews are from the earlier troublesome Rover sourced motors.

Also have just read reviews on www.autoexpert.com.au for both the Carnival and the Odyssey and I'd say the Carnival trumps the aging Odyssey by a reasonable margin… just saying (despite the dealership woes)….

    • Thanks for this. I did go through and it was quite informative.

Just putting in a word for the Tarago - although they are expensive and the hire companies buy them all up so almost impossible to get new.
BUT, the reasons the hire companies buy them is the reason why you should consider them.
We have had 3 Taragos. The current one has well outlived its original purpose as the kids have all left home. But I don't think we shall ever sell it. It owes us nothing. Nothing ever goes wrong with it, it is a dream to drive in any conditions. It is a Toyota.
Next best current alternative is the Carnival.

    • Thanks for the suggestion . But it's a bit overpriced for me . Of it was around the same price as a Kia or Honda . I would have certainly looked at it.

      • I have the Jap import Tarago, a 2007 Estima Areas with the 3.5L V6. Also has all the Japanese gadgets and options that our locally delivered taragos don't have/would cost a fair bit extra to include.
Its a great car and was only $15,000 with 72,000Ks.

Motor is smooth as and it makes the car surprisingly fast!
All parts are compatible with the local tarago, and the engine is the same as the Aurion.

  • As another option to carry 7 adults is the VW Caddy Max. Yes based on a commercial VAN ( like the Hyundai ) but drives more like a car. With all Seats, you still get a decent luggage space. https://www.volkswagen.com.au/en/models/caddy.html

    • thanks for this will have a look at this.

  • OP what car did you purchase?

    • i ended up buying an misti outlander 7 seats 4x4 LS safety pack for 33 driveaway.

      • Thanks for sharing, how do you think of the car?

Are you putting 2 child seat on 2nd row?

        • Yes i have 2 child seats in the 2 nd row .. along with an adult.
second row is 60-40 split so there are 2 car seats on the 60 split (Got one new car seat to fit in , the old one was a bit bigger)
I then pushed the 60 split row all the way to the front, so that an adult will have enough legroom to sit in the last row.

        • @Surender1986:

Thank you for sharing, I may add outlander on my list
