Click & Collect Admin Fee

I was just doing a bit of online shopping (as you do) and noticed that K-Mart want to add a $3.00 Click & Collect Admin Fee to my order! Is this a new thing?

What do you think of it? Do any other stores do this? Would you pay it?

Kmart has always had a $3 administration fee.

As above Target did have a $5 handling fee for orders below a certain spend, Target's fee was a little more justified because there was the potential they would have to send the item to your store.
For Target's click and collects, the order get sent to the store you want to pickup from. If they don't have stock or the facilities to fulfill the order, it gets sent to a nearby store if they have stock, or it gets sent to their Melbourne warehouse. This system means that their click and collects can take longer but you're nearly guaranteed to get your item.

In the case of Kmart, the order only gets sent to the store you want to collect from. So if they don't have stock, you don't get your item but you do get the $3 fee back.

    • In my experience click & collect only applies when that actual store has the item in stock. If that store doesn't have it, it either directs you to a store that does or says it's not available to click & collect from that store.

It varies from business to business. Target doesn't actually give you floor stock, the warehouse sends the item to your preferred store to be collected (as durd said)

      • Kmart's method allows items to be purchased twice. So if Kmart has 5 of an item and you purchase one of them through click and collect. Between the time your order was placed and the order is picked, people in store can purchase all 5 of those items.

        • This also applies to David Jones as well.

I personally feel the $3 admin fee is unjustified. In the longer term, Kmart should see an increase in online orders and a decrease in walk-in sales. At this point, they would be able to decrease store space and carry out more sales online. By implementing this $3 fee it just makes people hesitant to use services such as Click & Collect.

    • I think Kmart sees itself as a self serve business. Having previously worked for Kmart and know people that still do, Kmart tries to reduce the number of process in a store and therefore the amount of staff needed in a store. So they would prefer that you went in-store and got the item yourself, instead of getting a staff member to do your shopping for you. The main purpose of a Kmart staff member is to put stock on the shelves.

    • While i agree the fee is stupid. Kmart want people to go in their stores. I don't know about you but whenever i walk into a kmart store i find at least 1 extra thing i didn't know i needed until i went in store!

  • Knew about this fee and hence why i have never used the service
