Ozsale Pty Ltd: unrestricted access to my PayPal account via pre-approved payment => please be careful

Dear Ozbargainers

During my last purchase with Ozsale Pty Ltd on OZ Bargain, I paid with PayPal.

I accidentally discovered they didn't made an one-off payment, but instead created a pre-approved payment.

It allows them to charge your account whenever they want, for whatever they want (i.e. pre-approved).

It NEVER happened with any shop before.

It may be legal, but from my point of view, this is very serious, deceptive and potentially lead to abuse.

I cancelled immediately it, and if you paid by PayPal to Ozsale Pty Ltd, I urge you to check:

I hope this helps.

Isidore

Your post is dodgy, thanks for the deal Hamza.

  • I accidentally discovered they didn't made an one-off payment, but instead created a pre-approved payment.

You should've seen a message prompting you to agree to setting up pre-approved payments with Ozsale right after logging into PayPal. I just did a mock order and can see this.

The same thing already happens if you're purchasing at THE ICONIC.

It can be easily mistaken for a payment authorization.

The issue is not so much the authorization for recurring payments itself, but why they need it…

My post is a friendly warning, you can interpret it the way you want.

STEAM does the same thing with your first purchase.

Paid on Steam numerous times, and I don't have a pre-approved payment in PayPal (I checked the history).

Maybe you played a game with a monthly subscription?

Could be, son's library is huge.

    What nonsense. Calm down munchkins.

Merely because there is a pre-approved status does NOT provide this merchant, specifically operating under Australian laws and the Terms and Conditions, "…to charge your account whenever they want, for whatever they want (i.e. pre-approved)…"

The buying group also transacts under Dealsdirect.com.au
    and oo.com.au.

Yes its not ideal nor the norm, but not unusual.

Do you have any reference to any "scams" perpetrated?

  • No problem with my purchase but they use fastway couriers in Sydney and they are crap. Screwed up the delivery so many times do me now so unless Ozsale changes delivery company I'm not buying stuff from them

You must be new in online shopping. There are quite a number of websites that go for pre-approved PayPal method of payment. It doesn't mean the website is going to charge you whenever they feel like, unless you signed up for some subscription on some website that you have to pay regularly.

  • Do they offer some sort of subscription service?

PayPal Billing Agreement (which is what this is) are usually used by companies offering subscription services which make sense but it shouldn't be needed for companies selling one-off products.

  • I've noticed that Microsoft, Living Social and Amaysim also do this. I just periodically go through my PayPal account and check for any pre-approved payments. I have never seen a screen pop up like JSquared has shown. And I read through anything that pops up, very carefully (yes, I also read T&Cs). Although these sites are legitimate, the main thing that really bothers me about the pre-approvals is that it is very easy to accidentally commit to buying something from the site. Also, in the case of something like Microsoft, they may automatically renew my sub to Office when it expires, before I get a chance to shop around for a better deal.

It is definitely something to be wary of.

  • If you use PayPal on the PlayStation Store, that's also a preapproved payment
