Why Is There So Much Media Coverage of Australians That Break Laws Overseas?

Seriously, so much coverage! Break the law, bring some drug in/ out of another country, and you are famous, for like 20 years. Lucrative magazine and TV deals will be made with your family. Precious air time not dedicated to important issues that affect all Australians, but instead, dedicated to minute by minute coverage of their family members' movements. You turn on the news, nothing about new scientific discoveries, ground breaking innovations, success stories of decent human beings. Instead, just non-stop coverage of drug mules. This doesn't happen in any other country, just Australia. What is our obsession with criminals that hold Australian passports who break the law overseas?

    Why are you watching it?

It exists to create outrage and fear in order to sell your attention to advertisers. You are worse off for having consumed it because you believe it's reality instead of entertainment (which news competes against for your attention).

If you decide to stop consuming it you will have a few weeks where you have symptoms strikingly like those of an addict such as a smoker so be ready but after that your life will be a little better.

It's on the news though… Channel 7, Channel 9, and ABC at least…

      Incite drama
      Increase TV ratings
      ????
      Profit

It's basically the media's job really. How else do they make money?

      • I guess ACA don't have to report on the charges Ben McCormack is facing while this is front page news.

  • +4

The Cassie Sainsbury story is getting major publicity because her claim of innocence is so ludicrous.

    • +1

It's more that she's a good looking white girl.

such standard that forever alone ozbargainers dont share apparently but thats because there be ones who would dry hump a lamp post if it looked at them a certain way.

        • +1

          @xoom:
You can prob'ly price match that lamp post at Officeworks. lol

        • @xoom: Generally it's the incels that rate every woman as <5/10. Look up psychological defence mechanism.

        • Unrealistic but she is certainly carrying a lot of condition for a PT.

What's so 'ludicrous' about buying taped-up headphones from a random dude in Colombia, never checking them, and flying back on a ticket paid for by an unknown third party from Hong Kong? Sounds totally legit. The fact her trip tipped off the DEA even before arrival is just racial profiling!

      • +1

but thats just it. when im in need of headphones i fly to colombia to get them from some random. the trip all paid for by some random from hongkong. dont you all do that?

    Ummm because they are australian?

Think of someone you know with average intelligence

Then remember that half the world is stupider than that..

This has helped me to explain many things

    • +7

      I don't understand.

      • It's a George Carlin bit. Think about how stupid the average person must be. If it helps, imagine the someine at a flat 50 percentile. Half the country's dumber than that guy.

        • +2

Thanks, I was joking … I'll get my coat.

  • +1

It acts as a deterrent for others?

    • Or reason enough to go one bigger for the next guy or girl.

    • +4

Would it? Her family's already made serious dough peddling interviews with 60 Minutes, etc. Schappelle Corby's coming back to more money than she'd ever make in another lifetime. In 10 years, they'd still probably be making money off the direct to TV biopic. I'm surprised more bogans aren't doing it.

      • +1

Corby family may have gained some fame good or bad and some small money with it, but there is a law preventing actual convicted criminal to gain by selling stories or to media. I personally wouldn't spend 10 yrs in jail (like Corby, your life is in ruins and I doubt no one will hire you with such notorious name when media has bashed you so long)

News in this country is quiet for most of the time, even local gun crime is rare and has very little traction from the public, most of the time coverage would be Turnbull or Shorten going what not and government politics, and sports news. And we have Today Tonight or CA for cheap tabloid style media.

so when slightly more interesting new like foreign drug mule getting arrested, media would jump on it.

        • I wouldn't do 10 years because I can potentially make more than that and still enjoy my freedom. But look at some of the people in this situation, they had financial problems which drove them toward smuggling (this girl's PT business fell apart). It's unlikely they'd ever get a high paying job. For uneducated bogans, why not? If you get through customs, payday. Even if you don't, 60 minutes will pay your family a million bucks for interviews and soften the blow.

Schappelle Corby was never going to get a decent job, even before this. And just look at her family when this story was breaking. Getting busted was the best thing to ever happen to them.

    Schadenfreude

  • Seems pretty normal coverage. Same thing goes on in other countries.

    • Pretty much everyone in Australia can name more Australian drug mules than the names of Australian Nobel prize winners. People don't have a clue who their local MP is, but they all know exactly who schapelle corby is. Can ppl name who the defence, educational (federal and state level) ministers are? I feel the Australian media is dumbing the average Australians down, sadly. Ask your American friend, or your British friend, or your Iranian fiend, or your Chinese friend or your Korean friend to name a famous drug mule in their country and see their response…

  • JUST GOES TO SAY THAT GOOD PEOPLE ARE TREATED WITH DISTAIN
WHILE BAD PEOPLE ARE TREATED AS HEROES

    • +6

which category do people who post in capslock fit in?

  • Why do you think there is?

Loads of Australian crim stuff overseas rarely gets a mention.

  • it's part of the Tourism Australia/Government/Media/Hoteliers Australia conspiracy.

they are trying to discourage overseas travel so that people travel domestically and ignore the over inflated prices here.

    • Well, it is a lot easier to smuggle drugs interstate.

      …Hello AFP.

  • I'm waiting for the next "Should've gone to Specsavers" Ad.

Fortunately… or UN-fortunately, we live in the Digital World now.

It now takes seconds for ANY sort of news to travel around the world. (Capt Obvious)
I can remember the days when it took days or weeks to compile a newsworthy story, that then went out to the world.

Now-a-days you can post things "live".
Great if you are a moron that 'follows' things like 'The Kardashians'.

It takes forever to filter out all the 8ull5hit to get to the "Fake News"!!!!

  • Probably to try and educate the idiots that keep doing it, so they understand it's a bad idea?

Doesn't seem to work, should save the timeslot for more Home & Away or Neighbours i guess…

  • alleged; əˈlɛdʒd/Submit ~ adjective
said, without proof, to have taken place or to have a specified illegal or undesirable quality.
    "the alleged conspirators"
synonyms: supposed, so-called, claimed, professed, purported, ostensible, apparent, putative, unproven, rumoured, reputed, presumed, assumed, reported, declared, stated, avowed, described
"the place where the alleged offences were committed"

    • Not 100% sure what you are trying to say? That all of them are innocent? Every crime is "alleged" before a trial no matter what.

  • The problem is too many people are looking at life through the prism of reality TV and social media. People look at everything as entertainment - no matter how horrible it is. Hence Trump being elected and Brexit. They pull out the popcorn and go "this will be interesting". It is very hard to have sympathy for drug mules - the carnage that drugs cause is too high for that - however, the thought of someone using my luggage to transport drugs, e.g. the baggage handlers, the hotel I'm staying at, etc, gives me the willies.

  • With most people having a mobile-phone/camera, every-one becomes a news reporter.

Once the photos/videos get posted they can go "viral" and then mainstream news services pick 'em up and run with a story.
