New to Amex, What Should I Get?

Hello good people of Ozbargain.

Recently turned 18 and normally was too lazy to get an Amex card but I've evolved now. I've been very tempted by all these Amex statement credits and such. Currently first year uni, recently stopped working and will start job hunting after my exams, although I do get youth allowance for now. Basically want to be able to claim those seductive Amex benefits and apply for a card, but due to my experience, don't know anywhere to start.(Currently have a CBA Netbank saver account).

Any tips and instructions would be very helpful, thank you.

  • Uhhh, I was in that same situation 6 years ago and I struggled to get approval for a student credit card with CBA though I had a casual job… that only changed when I worked full time in an office during the holidays and I applied for an AMEX provided by my workplace as staff where you get special treatment anyway. So what I'm saying is it will be difficult to get approval for you.

But that said and since you said you want it, what would you use it for (JUST Cashback rewards or for everyday expenses too?), would you pay an annual fee and are you into collecting frequent flyer points.

    • just to get some of those bargain goodies. i was under the assumption you would also qualify for the offers if i had opened any amex issued card, not specifically credit cards with interest. So i guess i should just wait until i have a job then apply?

Pretty sure all amex cards here are cc

        • They're either credit or charge cards. They have prepaid AMEX in Japan though

  • +1

You need to be able to prove you have minimum 3 months of stable income.

  • Amex platinum edge is good for most people with a free year and 15k points but you need 30k household income

  • You will definitely have trouble being approved on Youth Allowance, or even a part time job. The basic 'Essentials' card needs an annual income of 40k.

Remember that a rejected credit application stays on your record for several years.
