Overseas course tax deductible?

Want to do www.sqlcruise.com, if I work with sqlserver can this be tax deductible?

  • Generally courses in relation to your work is yes, assuming it is a out of pocket expense, but the idea of deductability is that the rev the company derives is taxable, but since it's overseas obviously that company won't pay tax here (I assume).

  • Most cars come from overseas and are tax deductible if work related. What's the difference ?

    • Well buying one through an Australian car dealer means you buy the car in Australia… This course is US based. Having said that, why not ask your employer if they'll pay for it?

      • Prob will, and I think they will, just curious if plane fare and cruise can be a write off. The only reason I am going is the course… wink wink

  • This confuses me too (e.g. not having an ABN to quote). I'd like to see these things in writing because there may be some exceptions. I've heard that businesses can deduct overseas travel expenses so it seems the requirements are rather lax. Do I get a receipt from the street vendor I paid in Hanoi to entertain clients? It seems the system would be open to abuse, especially when dealing with the majority of countries that lack tax treaties with Australia.

I'm probably the least qualified to give advice on this matter.

Two things at issue here. One is a personal tax deduction and the other is a GST claim. The overseas course and associated travel costs will be tax deductible by an individual if paid for by the individual out of their own pocket and the course was directly related to their current field of work. It is not deductible if it is for some future work.

The GST claimable part is for businesses and they can only claim GST if GST is clearly indicated in the tax invoice. Obviously with international courses and travel, there is no GST, so nothing to claim.

    • This is the correct comment. The cost of the course is claimable against your personal income if you pay for it.

    • thanks, I am of the common sense approach if I went for 2 weeks, i would only claim the airfare at 50% of it, and so on.
