Britrail GB Pass

Hi Folks, my wife and I are going to the UK after leaving fifty one years ago. We have kept in touch with our family over these years, and now want to visit them. They live all over the UK, and after searching the net have found this website https://www.visitbritainshop.com/australia/britrail-gb-pass/. I phoned my Brother in law tonight, and he said that he just couldn't believe that the prices were so cheap. Has anybody bought a ticket from Britrail GB, or is it a scam.
As always thanks for your help, I dont know what I would do without this community.

  • considering the visitbritainshop is the "Official shop of the British Tourist Board" and located in Sydney on the same floor of the British Consulate then I'm leaning towards this being legit.

It sounds like the JR passes for Japan which , considering what you would pay for bullet train tickets in Japan, then they are incredibly cheap in comparison.

  • Never heard of BritRail, but Flight Centre sell them too so it might not be a scam.

Doesn't look like it is valid on the London Underground though, so value depends on where you are going in the UK.

  • Before you jump into these, I'd be checking out the price of Advance tickets for the journeys you want to do. $400 for 4 days sounds like it might be OK, but it's not certain. For instance, London to Edinburgh can cost as low as the equivalent of $57 and would account for one of those days. Basically you book as soon as they are available, 12-24 weeks out from the travel date.

Oh, and don't ignore the possibility of 1st class travel. It costs more, but not necessarily that much more, and they usually feed you, drinks, wifi, etc. - making it a nicer time

    • This is good advice. Advance seats will always be cheaper than this Britrail pass. I spent 3 weeks in UK in March and used the trains from London to Eastbourne to Gatwick - flew to Ireland then flew to Newcastle - to Carlisle to Preston to Birmingham to Chirk to London using Advance tickets. Total cost - GBP88 including a cheap first class ticket from Birmingham to London. If you can commit to dates / times, Advance tickets are the way to go.

  • Hi,
We have purchased a 15 day non consecutive pass through VisitBritain and it came through OK, though rather slow. Probably took about five weeks to get to us. Haven't used it yet as we go to England in June.

  • Many years ago I bought a 1 month Britrail pass (student concession) at Waterloo station with my passport proving overseas residency and youth.
It was validated on first use and allowed me to travel throughout Europe. Very cost effective
and allowed discounts on some other modes of transport including Rhine River cruises.
Not sure if this same pass is available today.
