Car Buying Companies

No sure if anyone has had this same experience.
I recently engaged 3 national car buying services to get me the best price for a new SUV I was looking to purchase. I am located in the south east qld area very close to Brisbane and the Gold Coast. They all guaranteed to negotiate with their list of local dealers, the best possible price for me. To make a long story short, all 3 quotes were about $1500 to $2000 more than what I paid for the exact vehicle when I contacted the dealer directly through carsales.com.au.
I feel people are fooled thinking they are getting a bargain through these services when this is certainly not the case.

    obviously
when i purchased a car, i asked auto-expect to get me a quote and it was more than what I paid as well.
these services are for people are just lazy, dont know how to bargain or dont know how to tell a dealer to stick it when the price isnt right.

The dealer is only going to sell a car at it's lowest price. If you get that lowest price by yourself you don't have to pay the finders fee.

  • I always thought those car buying companies had special quotas to get better prices, this is an interesting twist. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I understand most of these services simply send out an email to a range of dealers requesting their best price for XYZ inclusive off ZYX.
Some of these companies may be eligible with some manufactures for soft fleet pricing.
Fleet pricing is however not always the cheapest option.
At times a manufacturers offer can be more heavily discounted then some or all segments of fleet pricing.

As you would imagine, these middlemen need to be paid.
Generally dealers would not offer them a commission, as such its the purchaser whom must fund the middlemen.

  • Were the companies leasing companies or vehicle brokers?

A broker will basically just go out and get quotes for you, when I was selling I wouldn't give these guys the time of day because they masquerade as buyer's advocates when they're looking to line their pocktets just like the dealer is.

Leasing companies on the other hand were a completely different story, these guys would buy 20 - 25 units per month every month but we'd have to gut the price to get their business in the first place, but for that sort of volume you're generally willing to do it.
