Upgrading Electrical Switchboard in house

So my current house has a very ancient switchboard, full of ceramic fuses that I have had little experience with. I'm looking to go solar sometime in the next year, but a number of people have told me that my switchboard will require an upgrade before the solar installer will touch it.

Anybody here recently upgraded their switchboard? Just looking at costs and time involved and what to look out for when dealing with a sparkie when it comes to this type of work.

  • hi, I had my equally ancient switch board replaced when I had air con installed (also had some additional lights and power points done at the same time) about 5 years. the wood backing was rotting, and old ceramic fuses - can't compare to safety switches

from memory it was around the $500 mark. it was done in a few hours.

    • Was this in QLD?

      • yeah

    • $500 seems like a good deal

  • It's not a massive job to replace ceramic fuses with circuit breakers. It might turn into a bigger job if the layout needs changing, or the circuits aren't up to standard and need modifying.
