  • Also some good deals flying Hainan to Beijing for $330 - never flown them but hear good things. SIA is always top quality though so touch choice.

Returned with Hainan last week. Whist it is China's only 5 star rated airline, they fly only ancient a330-200s out of Sydney. Outbound flights had no back of seat screen, return flight did, but it didn't work. They compensated us 100rmb at the gate. They do have generic android tablets which they use for flights with no seat back screens.

I note most of the seat back pockets had deteriorated, so the magazine and sickbags just fall to the floor.

As with all Chinese carriers you can't use your mobile phone for entertainment, even in flight mode.

      • I think I was allowed to use my tablet (though not my phone)

        • Yeah…., tablets ok (even if it has a sim).

Other quirks of Chinese based airlines:

          • They ban (charging of devices) using power banks.
          • Taking photos inside the cabin of the plane prohibited (out of window ok). This is the same with intercity trains in China.
        • @ash2000:

          Oh … um … didn't know either of those … thanks :D

  • When going to China is cheaper than going to Bali (which costs $670, cheapest, syd)

    • There needs to be consequences for travelling to bali

  • also cheaper ($450-460) if you want to travel sooner on select dates in October and November

  • Any noticed any flights from Melbourne, via Cairns?

  • +1

Price is only cheap if you stay overnight at Singapore. Convenient connections all get charged at least 150 more.

  • After clicking on Melbourne to Hong Kong, it reveals:
    - the outbound part has to be over by Mar 18 (you can stay until Jun 18 if that's how long your holiday is)
    - MEL -> HKG 15 Mar, HKG -> MEL 22 Mar is estimated at $1558!!! I know it's from $687 … but 2.5x the price!?!?!?

    I'd vote negative if I hadn't voted already :S
