Online groceries: Is your Coles pricing usually higher than Woolies?

I'm doing some grocery shopping online and I'm noticing Coles is often more expensive for the items I look at.

For example (RRP pricing):

  • Arnott's Shapes Variety 10pk — Woolies 3.98, Coles $4.39
  • Sirena Tuna in Chilli 95g — Woolies $2.50, Coles$2.75
  • Old El Paso Burrito Dinner Kit — Woolies $6.49, Coles $7.15
  • Golden Circle fruit pouch — Woolies $1.89, Coles $2.08

It's not always the case, but it's true for a majority of the items I might buy - probably just pricing in my locality (SE burbs of Melbourne).

For those who do grocery shopping online, how do your Coles and Woolies compare?

    Coles inflate their prices for regular priced items, Woolworths do not.

    Coles specials and everyday low price items are still the same online and in store though.

    Next time you are in store check out the regular prices on those items and you'll see they are close to Woolworths prices.

      Thanks, will do — I suspected something like that was happening.

      Together with their Delivery Saver, Woolies is much more attractive for online shopping than Coles atm.

    I was comparing a specific product between Coles & Woolworths online to see which was the cheapest….Woolworths won so I went there to buy it. The next week I dropped into Coles and noticed their instore price was actually the same as Woolworths. Having higher online prices makes them appear more expensive overall which is a poor marketing strategy.

    I remember reading a news article where Coles admitted that their online prices were intentionally higher in order to cover the cost of picking and packing your groceries for you.

    Woolies are trying to claw back market share, so it wouldn't surprise me if their prices were lower instore and online.

    Coles are about 10% more expensive then woolies however I still prefer to use coles.
    Coles delivery is on time about 90% woolies is about 20%. Woolies is usually late by about 20-30min sometimes more.
    I always get delivery during the same 3 days in the week so I have tried woolies and coles a few times for comparisons.
    If woolies has a few items I want that coles doesnt then I will do a woolies shop but I check coles first.

    Coles allows you to modify your order woolies doesnt. Often I have forgotten an item or two or changed my mind on an item.

    Once coles was running late they called me to say there was a problem with the truck and they would call me back within the hour. The called me back within the hour and told me the truck needed mechanical repairs and I would not receive my order. They gave me a $60 coupon and free delivery on my next order which I placed for the following week.

    I did find that woolies provides better substitutions of products or they give you more of the item you ordered for free if they dont have the right size package for what you ordered.

    The only thing I dislike about online coles and woolies shopping is that with the meat they generally give you stuff that only has a 2-3 day expiry.
    Also the fruits are not always fresh but I always complain about that and they give me a refund.
