Where to Find Free Woodchips in Brisbane

I've read on forums about tree loppers that are happy deliver a load of woodchips/fresh mulch if they are in your area for free if you're not too picky. Does anyone know any in the inner Brisbane area that I could try? Just looking for a once off, not regular.
Thanks for any ideas.

  • redcliffe tip has free mulch but you have to collect.

    start calling tree loppers

    • "Mulch is available for residents only."
Don't think I live close enough even if I was willing to collect, good thought though.

      • Found this elsewhere - so might be an option if nothing else surfaces…

"Bunya Landfill Site, Bunya Rd, Bunya. 7am - 6pm (October - March), (7am - 5pm April - September), open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Payment by cash, cheque, credit card, or account by prior arrangement. Accepted waste: All categories except asbestos and contaminated soil. Green waste is processed into mulch. Moreton Bay residents can claim up to two cubic metres of mulch when available free of charge per visit. They can load their own mulch, or trailers can be loaded mechanically ( Sat/Sun 9am-12noon-$5/cubic metre). Council strongly recommends using personal protective equipment when handling mulch, including heavy duty gloves, long-sleeved shirt and pants, safety glasses and dust mask or other respiratory aids. Please remember to securely fasten a tarpaulin over your load of mulch prior to exiting the waste management facility. Non-residents and commercial operators wanting to purchase mulch, and residents wanting to purchase quantities greater than 2 cubic metres can do so."

  • There was an article in our local newspaper warning residents about free wood-chips.

One story was an older lady was approached by a tree-cutting guy and asked if she wanted some free wood chips. She said "yeah a barrow load or two would be great thanks". Next thing she knows the guy dumped his whole truck of wood chips across her driveway and drove off. As she had no identification of the person, there was nothing she could do, and was left to deal with the lot.

Apparently its not uncommon as these tree lopping guys don't want to pay fees to dump their trucks at the council tip.

    • Yeah I guess that would the be catch - all or nothing, I'm guessing several cubic metres? or more?

      • I would ring some of them anonymously and ask for yourself, I wouldn't identify yourself unless you wake up in the morning to a giant pile of woodchips blocking your driveway!

        • Good plan

  • There used to be a website where you could register for free woodchips. I heard a heap of bad reviews from people who used it though. Seems as if some wood loppers would dump some absolute JUNK and drive off.

    • I actually found a site that would let you register for free woodchips - but there was a fee to use the website and the whole thing just felt dodgy. I think I'd rather just call around.
