Recommend A Compact Camera For Europe

Hello,

I will be backpacking in Europe from June and i'm looking to upgrade to a much better camera.

I have done a bit of research and i think i have narrowed my options down to:

Canon G9 MII
Sony DSCRX100M3
or
Sony Alpha a5100
Edit, adding: Canon G7 X MII

I consider myself an amateur and usually use the auto settings.

What do you guys think? Any other options i should consider?

Cheers

The first 2 options are point and shoot, I would pick the RX100 Mk 4 at least.

Alpha if you want to get into better photography and buy more lenses in the future.

Personally I would just buy easy RX100 Mk 5 as it's one of the revered point and shoots on the market with the best features available to it. It is a bit pricey at the moment so a 4 would suffice. The only change is some of the features like better slo-mo and fps.

  • Would recommend an RX100 for backpacking trips

The Mk 1 is perfectly fine (I used the M2 for 5 weeks in Europe). You could probably find it second-hand for around $300-400-ish and you could likely sell it for a similar price if you wanted when you get back.

  • Canon GX7 mark 2 is another great camera if you just want to shoot photos. Does 1080p recording too and has a flip screen. Very similar to the RX100m3 but cheaper and has a touch screen which makes it easier to use and slightly more reach at 100mm vs 70mm. Sony's RX100m3 is definitely better but unless your peaking at every pixel or hardcore photographer, you won't tell the difference much.

If you want to start getting into photography the A5100 is a better choice since it has a bigger sensor and can change lenses and has manual controls.

    • What this guy said (re:Canon G7).

  • Panasonic

  • The latest smartphone with the best camera.

  • iPhone 7

    Thanks all for your comments.

I'm leaning towards the G7 X MII at this stage
