That is a cheap price for the delonghi. But does brand realy matter with column heaters. I would just go for the cheapest. e.g. see below (also has timer)
    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/kambrook-11-fin-oil-column-h…

    • I think the delonghi looks nicer & I trust the brand (will match the coffee machine), however yes, you are right. A heater is a heater

      • I'm sure there's efficiencies in a name brand heater than say, a $12 one from Kmart

        • Maybe a thermodynamic physicist can chip in. If the conversion of energy is inefficient it becomes heat, and heat is what you want in a heater, so all heaters are close to 100% efficient.

        • Based on what?

          @forumninja:

          http://www.newair.com/articles/oil-filled-heaters/

Here's a brief overview of how it works:

          1. Electricity is channeled into a resistor inside the heater, which turns the energy into heat.
          2. That heat is absorbed by the diathermic oil that is enclosed in the heater.
          3. As the oil in the heater warms up, it begins to circulate through the fins and columns.
          4. As the oil moves, it transfers heat into the metal of the heater's fins, creating an even surface temperature.
          5. As the metal fins heat up, they begin to radiate heat into the room. This heat is circulated throughout the room by natural convection in the air.

Essentially as I understand it, the resistor / heating element will be rated at 2400W. So doesn't matter if you buy a $50 heater or a $500 heater, 2400W in = 2400W out.

Possibly the design of the column heater could have some effect on how heat is dissipated, however it would be negligible.

      • I would definitely recommend these over the cheaper ones. I've had column heaters since i was a kid. When i moved out i started buying the cheap ones and was disappointed by the heat. Picked up one of these 2nd hand and realised what had been wrong. They are just better don't ask me why just my personal experience.

At least you will not get nasty surprise like this:

      https://www.bunnings.com.au/returns/recalls

  • are they better than other heaters?

    • There are no moving parts which means oil heaters are 100% efficient. The only negative is that it takes them a while to warm a room.

  • Are these oil column heaters expensive on the power bill?

  • Just got this from David Jones online for $159 (with amex $30off) then pricematch to Myer at $139, bringing the price down to $109 plus 7% cash rewards…

Wondering if we can pricematch the myer ebay price to david jones online?

Love the heater.. and it comes with 7 year warranty.

lol not sure how these heaters die. Have a 20+ year old column heater works just as well as a new heater.

the only thing i can thing of is if you have issues with the switches/themostat/or timer as i guess they are more prone to breaking perhaps.

      • Wow really? I'm always unlucky with electronic. The previous oil heater died within 4-5years. I guess they know it's not gonna break hence the 7 years warranty lol.

        • I have 3 oil heaters all 10+ yrs but maybe I'm lucky haha

    • How did you price match at DJ's online after purchase?

      • not sure

      • I did click and collect and did the pricematch on the spot. I bought the giftcard earlier using amex so the difference refunded to giftcard.

    • How were you able to get $30 off with Amex?

  • This or $300 for a gas one off gumtree?

Thinking about long term running costs..
