Melbourne - Rome / London - Melbourne - Conundrum!

Hi all,

So I have managed to amass 380,000 Velocity points, and 680,000 QFF points.
I don't hold any status credit, this is all through credit card bonus points and misc spending.

Now the mrs and I are planning to go on a Europe trip next year (June/July) for 5 weeks, departing Melbourne to Rome, then exiting London to Melbourne.

My current plan is to fly Business using the velocity points (139,000 points + ~$90 in fees per person), for the London to Melbourne leg, and then cash for Melbourne to Rome.
However, the one way tickets are far from economical, are there any tips on booking one way flights?

I am looking to retain my QFF points (580,000 points) for a future RTW trip for two.

Unfortunately both my partner and I can't apply for the current AMEX Velocity offer, otherwise it would have been perfect…

Any tips?!

Cheers

  • why dont you just fly business back? and slug it out in eco going there?

Well, you can always book Melbourne - Rome return and then get a cheap flight from London to Rome. Makes the flight back slightly more inconvenient, but I'd say for almost 24 hours flight time, the extra 2 hours don't change much.

You can transfer your leftover Velocity points to Krisflyers(Singapore Airlines).

Assuming you have 102,000 points leftover you can transfer that to 75,000 Krisflyer Miles. Flights Melbourne to Rome are 53,000 miles + $90Aud. So you can either buy one, pay cash for the other or earn/buy some more points to pay for both.

That's assuming you want to fly economy.

  • In June, it might be cheaper to buy a one way cash fare from Europe to Oz compared to the other direction. I expect it is off peak in June for Europeans to visit Oz in winter.

Another suggestion is to fly budget airlines to Europe because they price their fares as one way segments. You can fly Jetstar to Singapore/Bangkok and then Norwegian to Europe. It might bring the cost down just a little bit but is far from ideal.

Overall though, I don't think that paying cash one way and using points the other is the best value strategy.
