Best time to buy Christmas flights - HK?

Keen to go to Hong Kong over Christmass time, but browsing through comparison sites and airline sites (preferably flying with Qantas or Virgin), return prices are at minimum of 1.4K..

Does the rule of thumb "buy early to save" apply to Christmas travel period? Or anyone know of a good time to buy?

    Before December 25

    • Is there actually a "right time to buy"?

I buy my OS tickets when they are the cheapest eg on sale like the recent jetstar deal.

Another option maybe to look at cheap flights to KL or Singapore and connecting flights.

  • Booked flights to hk for mid June in late April. Got 850 return. Given we were stuck on dates dates, we probably couldn't have gotten cheaper, but other dates a few days either side of ours were around 650 (for worse flight times though, I prefer night flights).

  • Got any Qantas frequent flyer points? Maybe you can score some classic award flights (not sure if there is much availability left however)

    • Yep and AmEx points too!
How does classic award flight works?

      • You go onto the Qantas website and search for flights, ticking the "Classic Award flight" flight box. The results which come up well tell you their cost in points. What date ranges are you looking at?

I just had a look and as an example I can get flights to HK on Cathay (better than Qantas in my opinion) departing on Dec 13th, returning Dec 27th. Premium economy is 105,000 points for the return journey.

for super peak period flights, best time is to book as early as possible. the pricing will just keep going up for the christmas season.

  • I'd like to know too, planning to go in early December…
