Changing jobs in 2 weeks time. Where should I go for a quick getaway for a week or so?!?!

Hello all,

I finish up work next Friday 2nd and start new job on 19th.
Any suggestions on international deals/places to go for approx 7-8 days?!

I haven't done an international trip in a few years, but last time I did, I used Skyscanner website to look at all the options. Is this still the best method?

Also, I think I still have a CitiBank account from last time I traveled - is this still the best way for money management, fees, etc.?

I was thinking:
Thailand?
Cambodia?
Vietnam?
Something else crazy?

Not super keen on Bali, as I have been there before and didn't really like it.

Going with a mate, thinking the above places for eating, drinking & a bit of shopping & night life - and of course, budget (roughly $2k all up?)

Cheers! Thx In Advance!

Road trip it up to Cairns and then fly back?

You might also be interested to do one of those rental vehicle relocations… https://imoova.com/imoova/relocations

Or if you are keen for an overseas trip check out some flight options here:

Personally I think Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam are good options.

Cambodia - You can do both Siem Reap and Phnom Penh in that amount of time/
It will be a nice taster but i do urge you to explore further afield.

Vietnam - Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue

or Hanoi - Halong, Sapa and maybe even Tam Coc

  • Has anyone done these imoova short holidays before

Don't assume the airfare is the most expensive part of a holiday - consider all other costs too, especially hotels.

I would consider Kuala Lumpur. You can get luxurious 5-star hotels for under $100 a night (don't forget Cashrewards and coupons, great food, great shopping, and easy to get around (Uber recommended). Flights with Malaysia Airlines are affordable if you don't want the stress and inconvenience of a low-cost airline.

I liked Vietnam, but hotels were very expensive (even 3-star). You'd struggle to stay within $2k all up. Shopping there was a disappointment, and not so easy to find good (safe) food if you don't know where to go (in Saigon anyway).

Yes, Citibank is the way to go for withdrawing money from ATM's (debit plus account), but check before you travel whether for your destination country there is a certain bank to look for (in Japan, only some banks work).

Not sure where you were looking but I've been to Vietnam twice and both times could easily find 4 star hotels for under $60 a night.

      • I was in Saigon. In 2009, I paid $100AUD for 10 nights in a 3-star hotel. The AUD wasn't strong, but compared to other places in SE Asia (KL, or even Singapore and Hong Kong) it was very expensive.

interesting i find Singapore and Hong Kong to be very expensive for Accomodation.
Vietnam was cheap but not as cheap as Thailand.

        • 100AUD all up or per night? If per night, that's a ripoff.

I was in Da Nang last month and had nice 3 star hotels for around 50AUD/night.

        • @dasher86: I agree, Singapore and Hong Kong are not cheap. But at the time (2009) a 3-star hotel in Vietnam cost me more than in Singapore and HK (I travelled to all 3 in that period).

        • @greenpossum: Well, that was all I could find at the time. Yes, I found it a ripoff, but I had checked many hotels on many sites, and this was all I could get. It was around March. Not sure if that mattered.

@Make it so: I think there's more choice and competition now, 8 years later.

    • Also make sure your Citibank account is still active (esp if there has been no transactions into or out of the account for some time) at least a week or so before your trip.

      • Good point. Always let banks know you are travelling, so they don't cut off your account because they suddenly see an overseas transaction. I always notify banks for the cards I plan to use. Some let you inform them online.

        • I never do & have never had any payment declined.

  • Thanks for the input.
Decided on Thailand. Get decent direct return flights to BKK with Thai Airways.
Also, I called commbank to ensure overseas access to cards, all good, they notified me that I am entitled to free travel insurance with the package I am on (Bonus!).
Checked with Citibank, yes my card had expired. Ordered a new one straight away, which has been approved, just waiting for it to arrive, hopefully before I go next week! Cheers.
